Rock and a hard place for my next fun car...
Figured I'd post this in the 997 forum. I have been searching for my next "fun" weekend car for awhile now and I'm having a hard time narrowing down what I really want/need. I have a comfortable daily driver so this car will be for drives, and fun with my wife and daughter. With that in mind, and needing to have rear seats so a car seat would fit the GT3 is out. The car needs to be 6 speed as well, I don't have interest in PDK at this time.
So that leaves...
993 Turbo/C2S - The least practical of the three, most likely to hold value, less creature comforts but probably the most car likely to be an "event".
997 Turbo - More creature comforts, having a hard time finding one that meets my specs, fast.. fun...
991 GTS - I drove one of these the other day and really liked it. Awesome interior compared to the others, good infotainment, least likely to hold value probably but who knows with last NA MT.
Budget is roughly $115k max... 997 turbo I'd like to keep under 75k, GTS under 105k.
Good problems to have I know but I don't want to buy another car for awhile.

993 rock-solid investment but antiquated SRS and more likelihood for maintenance issues to put a damper on weekend fun.
991 GTS biggest cost of deprecation, somewhat stiffer ride in terms of comfort for wife and kid.
Personally I would go with the 997TT of those three you mention. But also personally I'd be looking at a NA 997.2 unless that weekend fun with wife and kid is going to involve track runs.

I would look for a 997.2 Turbo 6 speed. Going to pay more but will hold It's value well and you get the DFI engine.

I’m not sure that’s the case anymore. The 2009 electronics were okay in 2009, and they were certainly better than the electronics found in 997.1 cars. Now they’re also very outdated, and more difficult to upgrade.

If you go TT, then go with a TTS. Personally if you have a comfy daily, then I'd really look at a 993 C2S.. depends on how much you drive though. 997 is going to be better fit (and safer) for the kiddo and better for those longer highway runs. But any 993 is going to be an event to drive just like you said. Skip the 991.

993 - lovely car but starting to feel its age and the TT's are very spendy. Will likely require more ongoing maintenance & upkeep (YMMV). People spend significant coin trying to get them looking/handling as well as they ought to.
997 - Significantly more modern/powerful/better-handling car, while still possessing good sense of smallness, hydraulic steering feel, a classic 6MT and some raw delight when hustling a backroad. The 997.2 with its 9A1 motor will cause fewer worries and better resale.
991 - Another big step toward modernity, comfort, electronics. Also significantly larger than prior generations. It does everything well except convey 911 driving feel/rawness. Its a nice car, but perhaps TOO polished? Also, depreciation is nowhere near over (with possible exception of the 50th Anniv. model).
Keep in mind that for a weekend/fun car, lightness may provide more lasting satisfaction than horsepower. Therefore, among the 997s, don't overlook the 2S or 2GTS in your search for a TT. The 2WD cars are 350 lbs lighter than the TT of the same generation (curb weights: 3,150lbs plays 3,500lbs). You can feel 350 lbs in every situation, whereas you can only feel power on acceleration.
Drive them all and make your choice. Happy hunting!

Don't want to buy another car for a while. Fun rides with wife and daughter.. hmm that throws out the 993 for safety reasons. Doesn't it? I mean.. 30 year old car seems like the obvious least safe option. If you don't want to buy another car for a while it seems like a young person will outgrow being in the back of any sort of 911.
