Default Audi TT question for forum

Anyone familiar with these? I will scout the Audi forums too, but thought I would throw this out. My friend is looking at an older one, 2001 225HP with 106K miles on it. Lots of new things on it including timing belt. Anyone?

Probably better to go read quattroworld.com or audiworld.com TT forums..Its got the 1.8 motor which was known to sludge up a bit.

Im on my 9th Audi.

Ive had 2 with the 1.8t, 3 with the 2.0T, 1 with the 4.2v8, 3 with the 3.0T.

The 1.8T was a workhorse. Much less issues than the early 2.0T engines (2005.5 to present). The TT225 is an upgrade to the 1.8t that has been in Audi cars since 1996 in NA. Its a great engine to go after. The aftermarket for that engine is really stable. IIRC the Achilles heels on the TT225 was the gear box. Very common to "grind" into second and to grenade gears when you pump up the hp levels. The other drawback on the TT and VW cars in general is the lack of "real" quattro. They use the electronic diff or Haldex system which means the car tends to drive more FWD biased. Its not terrible, just not like the TorSen based systems from Audi that are famous and regarded as some of the best AWD systems in the world. One neat thing about the elect AWD system in the TT is that you can buy a Haldex controller

http://www.hpamotorsports.com/product_haldex.html

These units made by several companies allow you to adjust things like bias and other on your AWD system. They're pretty trick.

Otherwise, these are pretty easy cars to work on. On an Audi that age you may have a ton of little repairs but if you are a 5 out of 10 at turning wrenches they are mostly all very simple and inexpensive repairs. For example, carry some coilpacks in the trunk... seriously. They're 20 bucks and I used to always carry a couple in the trunk. Literally takes under 3 minutes to swap them out if you burn one up..and you will.

MAF sensors... again, really easy to swap out and inexpensive but they go.

N75 valves, bypass valves, and turbo hoses/vacuum lines will need ongoing replacements over time. Very inexpensive but could be annoying if you arent expecting it.

Fun cars though.

Mike

I've owned two Audi TT variants. I owned a TTS and a TTRS. Not familiar with mk1 TT, only mk2. They were both screwed together pretty well. Lots of aftermarket support and tuning possibilities. The weight distribution combined with the haldex AWD (which favors the front wheels being driven).. makes for a sporting experience which is mostly good up to 5 or 6/10ths. Extremely predictable, not too hard to work on. Would have a great deal of hesitation owning another or any other VW/Audi product.

I love Audis, but before I'd buy one as a sports car, like the TT is touted, I'd get a comparable year Boxster first - much better sports car for not much more $, all things considered.

Thanks for all your responses! I knew I could count on the expertise here.Interesting that the Audi forums that I checked out has so few to none, responses to questions. Our forum is really terrific. My friend has a bug for one of these tt's, and maybe it is the price point. The one he is looking for is only$7400. I loved my Boxster. He should have bought it from me, but we were talking 30K, not 7K.

I've owned a 2001 Audi TT225 6spd and I quite liked the car - it was one of those "I HAVE to try one" sorta bug.
Water pump and the timing belt are the main things to watch out for. But there are little things (mostly electric) that may fail due to the age.
At that mileage, you should check the CV joints and suspension as well.. mine had 130k miles when I bought..
Gauge clusters were known to fail.. there was even a lawsuit I think. But they'd all have failed and been through replacement by now
I didn't have any issues with it, other than the fact that it's not a P-car
But it was a local, single owner car with OCD levels of documentation/maintenance.. there was a little diary that documented every fuel up with mpg (15 years worth)!
Overall it's a fun and nippy little car.. check the AudiZine forums. they're still active. AudiWorld seems quieter.
BTW, for a 2001 with 106k miles, you should ask your friend to bargain more.. mid 6k or so.

AudiWorld used to be the go-to, and was generally regarded as the best. However, when the forum was bought a few years back, many of the long time users went to the new QuattroWorld forum. For a 2001 TT, that means that the best info up to the migration is on AW, and current questions will probably get the best responses on QW.

Tell your friend to head over to link below if he need any question answer about the TT. They're base in the UK

There's ALWAYS action there compared to other Audi forums.
