Default IMS article

Happy Saturday all. I recently read an article about the IMS failures. Pretty comprehensive actually and helped me understand more about this. In my 997 quest, I am boning up on this scary subject. Worth a read if you haven’t already ; http://autohaushamilton.com.au/news/...ts-made-simple

Anyway, the article reports these are the models effected;

- All 986 Boxster models.
- 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715
- All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models)
- 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745

Can someone shed light on this for me? Or maybe is there a better chart listing years?

I am am not going to roll the dice here. Even it perfextly fits my criteria, this issue would be looming in my head. And, from what I understand, a PPI really wouldn’t be able to diagnose this.

Thanks ahead of time.

Not really a big deal 2006+, but if you want to be sure, get a 2009+ (different engine design, no IMS or IMS brg to worry about)

If you have an 05 or earlier car with the smaller IMSB then you just replace it and your in good shape. If it is a 06-08 model with the larger IMSB then problems are fairly rare. Its pretty much that simple. If you have an 05 it could possibly have the older or the newer IMSB. Engine numbers and VINs are not totally reliable and the only way to know for sure what bearing you have is to physically check.

looks like a digit is missing in 997 engine number? if your start with 6950, there should be four more digits - not 3. That is how it looks on my engine number. If your start with 056950 then there should be ten digits.

Exactly this. Don't overthink it and don't miss out on a great car just because of internet hysteria.

I'm also on a quest to acquire a 997, I'm only looking at 06-08. I have my eye on this super sexy 08' C4, waiting for his response to my offer.

Go to youtube and search for porsche ims failure. Jake Raby from Flat six has a 30 minute video with the best explaination . Maybe someone can link the video.
