I had Billy Boat crossover pipes installed in the summer. Sounded real good. Decided to add Fister Mufflers and had them installed today.
Well I am very disappointed in the tone now. It just sounds cheap. Like the young kids with souped up fat mufflers on their hondas, or toyotas.? I hope it just is a matter of not being used to the new sound. But if I'm not liking it after a while I'm going back to the standard mufflers. Anyone else experience this disappointment in the sound after installing the same arrangement of BB and Fisters?

 

I dont have BB headers but do have an 996 X51 package car and a 997.1 both with Fisters.

Love the sound all through the RPM range on both Fister cars.

I dont think I have ever read a disappointed customer review after installing Fisters. Yours could be the first.

Did Fister do the mod for you?

 

Same here. Very surprised. I would think the crossover pipe would enhance the glorious FIster sound.

 

 

I can't imagine liking the stock mufflers over anything.

Is this a reaction to increased volume or an indifference to timbre?

 

 

 

Maybe it's a bit premature to make my mind up of the final sound of what I believed to be the best combination exhaust setup for a i997.2, 3.8 4S Cab. So I will be driving it with an open mind so I make a final decision of my set up.
I hope I'm wrong and begin to love the sound.

 

Is your impression/experience purely from the driver seat ? Have someone else drive your car while you follow in a quiet car and see if it sounds better to you.

 

I got Fister + Sharkwerks on my 997.2 C4S about 2 years ago. On my first drive I was a little disappointed. I think I was not crazy about the sound in the 2500-3000 rpm range. It doesn't drone, but I just wasn't crazy about the timbre. Once I was able to get out and spend some time above 4k rpm I began to appreciate it. Since then I think there has been some break-in to the exhaust note. So my advice is to give it some time, but also to look for opportunities to enjoy it above 4k rpm because that's where it is appreciated the most.

It sounds very fart can-like at all but full throttle. I'm sure its all relative but here is an old car of mine...


The boxer 6 just doesnt sound very good IMO with the exception of intake mods. The higher pitched "wail" from intake mods is very pleasing to the ear IMO.

I have the exact Fister/BB set up on your exact C4S Cab in your exact color and it sound amazing. And thats my son dreaming about what car he wants to take out for the evening. Keep dreaming !

 

Another +1 in the surprised group here. I'll cosign on fc3; there's a change in amplification on a specific range of frequencies; not total sound spectrum. So it sounds different depending where you are in the rev range and especially noticeable around 3,500 rpms under some load. I actually thought the mufflers were a little 'too' quiet for the first few hundred miles but they have since gotten a little louder and that range has opened up a bit more. Then I learned they are exactly what I need; near factory quiet at partial load under 75 mph, beautiful tone at WOT that I can hear through my helmet on track. Genuinely a best of both of worlds type mod. I love the crackles on start up in first gear off throttle, makes me think I'm in a GT3RSR!

As a side note; I met Darin at his shop for the install and to chat 911's. I know you aren't questioning his work quality but I want to reiterate - he's an absolute stand up guy and boon for the P-car community.

 

I'd give it a couple weeks and see how you feel about it.

I tend to modify my exhaust system around the mufflers, assuming I like the stock tonality well enough. I've found it worked out great on my previous audi cars. On the GTS I've done the sharkwerks bypass and next will be the headers/cats. I'll do the mufflers last (I don't think it will be needed at all) since that changes the sound itself the most, not just volume.
