Which non-GT 997 is the best 997?

Thanks guys... I am now between GTS and Turbo... I love the widebody shape (my C4S), and that's just something I must have, so kinda limits the options. Mezger will probably go down as one of those legendary classic engines in history and it's absolutely bulletproof (996 Turbo guy put down 600K miles), but the issue with Turbo is the lack of engine and exhaust noise. Anyone has been in a Turbo with good exhaust system?

Actually there is a difference in exhaust note between 997.1 and 997.2 turbo. I have 997.2 and friend has 997.1 which is quiet all around, my turbo is quiet at idle but makes significant more noise under load when accelerating. I am on the fence about getting exhaust for it because it is noisy enough under load but quiet as a mouse at idle. Wether the tone is satisfactory is subjective, I suggest you find one of each and drive them.

One of my main attractions to the GTS was being able to get the widebody (this was pretty much non negotiable) and RWD together. The RWD was also a requirement for this car.
At some point in the future I will have a 991.2 GTS. So then I can have RWD, turbo, and widebody together. Thats havin' your cake and eating it too, I'd say.
if I had it all to do again (2 years later) I'd still get the GTS over the Turbo.

Correct, as I said "until now", only last year they started using 9A1 architecture but with massive changes, that only implemented in the GT3 variants.

Do not fret about motorsport engine changes. A Cup car engine is rebuilt after 30h. The street 9A1 is an incredibly reliable engine; time has proven that.

Not enough time on the engine, already carbon deposit issues, and PROOF is the fact that they have NOT used it on track until major changes were made. It's NOT a bad engine, unreliable, or else, BUT it's just a mass produced sports car engine and in another class compared to Mezger and the new GT3 variant. Porsche even admitted they simply could NOT produce Mezger engine and expect to profit from the sales... anyhow, let's agree to disagree. I am not against 9A1 and may even buy one, but you simply cannot put it in the same category as 997.1 TT, GT3, GT2 RS engines!

I am waiting to see if I get my GT3 allocation or not... in the meantime, I drove my car in the winter the other day and I genuinely enjoyed it so much, I may get a newer 997 instead if I don't get my GT3 allocation.
What I've found personally, is that 991 is only worthwhile in the top trims, specifically GT3. What I've found in my test drives is steering feel loss is quite noticable (supposedly fixed in GT3), the manual transmission off PDK does NOT feel great, and too much sound deadening, the size, the cabin just makes it a more GT car than my liking. There's been so much GT-treatment in 991, that you need some of that taken away to make it feel like 911 again, and GT3 for the most part achieves it.
So, which 997 would be the best one made? I am skipping GT-versions, as I find those amazing for the track, but as a daily they're simply too much (too loud, too rough, clutch extremely heavy). I think 997 GT3 would be an amazing 911 for track duties and some weekends but can't be daily.
Candidates are:
- 997.1 TT (Mezger engine)
- 997.2 C2S/C4S
- 997.2 TT
- 997.2 GTS
Which do you think is the best 997? I am more in favor of the NA engines, but what I absolutely dislike about DFI 997.2 engines is the lack of engine/exhaust noise. It's by far the biggest downside of that engine, it simply feels not as raw. I've never driven a modded 997.2 to see if an aftermarket exhaust has helped or not, but generally I am never a fan of aftermarket exhausts, they either drone or too loud. Mezger Turbo is a great engine, and probably best engine of the list, but then again, it has very weak exhaust note. GTS is a cool combo, but has the same DFI shortcomings, center lock wheels and kind of glorified C2S.
So, what do you guys think?

Oh and I vote GTS

Oh... but I do! Not only there is a 9A1 variant under a mid-engine RSR as there were original, stock, 9A1 engines racing in GT classes in the US with stellar results including reliability. The 9A1 is a clean sheet design and a good one.

I bought a RWD GTS 997.2 over a 997.2 Turbo and have never looked back. Both great cars but the GTS is raw. I daily it and even with carbon buckets it's still very comfortable. Centre locks are a pain but if you look hard enough you may find one without them. The GTS sounds amazing too! So my biased vote goes to the GTS.
