Default Rookie question

Just acquired a 2005 997. The Manual states, “If wheels have to be removed during a workshop visit, do not forget to hand over the socket for the security wheel bolts along with the car key.” I have the socket, no problem. What does one do with the car key to change the wheels/tires?

Thank you.

Its just a reminder to give them the security lug.....not just toss them your car keys and bid them fare well. If you do that, you will get a call in a few hours asking where the security lug is.

Thanks for the response, but I guess I don’t get it. Is this only an issue when there is a service need taken car of someplace other than a Porsche dealership? Surely, they have the socket for the security lug and use it all the time.

what am I missing?

It's not that complicated - hand over the car key so they can drive the car and hand over the socket for the security wheel bolt so they don't have to search through their many security keys to find the one that fits your specific bolt.

you are overthinking this. There are several iterations of the wheel locks and while the dealer might have all of them, indy shops don't. And its much quicker for you to just give the tech your wheel lock rather than pay $150 per hour for him to try all their sockets.

there is 50 different keys for lugs, they dont want to check all 50 till they find it. Plus you may go to a service dealer that isnt porsche. so give them the key if they need to take a wheel off

Is the security lug not in the frunk where it is stored? Thats where mine is and the cayenne is with the spare is. All you need is to give them the key . Maybe Im missing something.

Just make sure you get that socket back when you pick up the car

Just wanted to point out an observation that this was one of the nicer and more helpful exchanges on Rennlist this week. Good for us!
