Default Is the 997 Turbo Manual transmission better than 996 Turbo?

My insurance company is swapping out a 2004 Turbo manual transmission with a 2010 Turbo manual transmission.

Are there any improvements between the 2 generations or are they the same?

The information below does not show which is "better" and what makes one better than the other.....

http://www.gboxweb.com/997specs.html
http://www.gboxweb.com/996specs.html

Define better, maybe someone here can help you. Do you mean less failure prone? Geared for 0-60 or more road use, or track use? Less noise and rattle? Smoothness? Better looking after a few beers? Lighter?

Peace

Is there any difference between the 996 gen. turbo gearbox and the 997 gen. turbo gearbox. That is my question. Were any improvements or changes made between the 2 generations.

your question is literally answered in the links he provided down to the gear ratios
edit: actually it lists every other trim level BUT the turbo. still pretty sure they are different manufacturers...

Thanks!

I just see references for Carrera 2 / 4 gearboxes and Then the GT cars. Not "Turbo"

There are various tech publications by Porsche that describe stuff in more detail.... you are going to have to dig. There is a publication each year (or generation) called "Service Information Technik" that may help.

Forums that are more track oriented may be a better place to look. For me, I would just look at gear ratios.... if it is geared higher, you will loose torque.... lower and you get more torque but must shift earlier (something I would desire BTW). Speed and odometer accuracy?

Beyond that, I think it is safe to assume a transmission designed for a car with higher torque and HP will be either the same or more robust.... but that is an assumption.

There may be issues with resonances and vibration that the whole system is designed to mitigate.... but I dunno..... I would never install a part designed for another model unless I really knew what I was doing .... but that is just me.

I took the Turbo to EF1 Motorsports in Signal Hill, CA to have the clutch replaced in July and they completely f*&(ed up my car to the point where it no longer turned on. After transporting my car to a Porsche Dealership they discovered pinched wires, and a completely destroyed transmission. $25,000 in damages. EF1's insurance will not pay for a brand new transmission, they are sourcing one from a salvage yard (Against My Will!!!!) and this is what I am being forced to accept (a 997 Turbo transmission). So, that is why I am asking, and it sucks the situation I am in, but I am trying to get things put together so I have as much information as possible. Im really sad about all this, they promised me they would do competent work and quickly.. They ruined one of the nicest 996 Turbos in the US. **** EF1

well for one, it doesn't have a viscous coupling in it. It should bolt up fine and theoretically should work, but I'm not sure how you're going to run your front wheels.
