Personally, I think its driven almost exclusively by big gains in the financial market, and a resultant increase in purchases by 'New-to-Porsche' folks looking to treat themselves piled on top of the normal enthusiasts looking for 991's. 997's are too old for non-enthusiasts looking for turn-key, CPO warranty, prestige cars so the 991.1's got most of the benefit.

It will definitely be interesting to see how 991.1 pricing adjusts come Fall/Winter and if the current bubble flattens out a bit.

PS: My experience is identical to Ynot's... Nice first year 991.1 S's could be had for mid to low $60's a year ago. They are that much or more now a year later. Still lots of depreciation left in the 991's, so I opted to pick up a 996TT (flat or appreciating) for a year or two and see if some nice 977.1 TT or 991.1 S opportunities come up. Poor me, have to suffer with a pristine first gen manual transmission Turbo! ;-)
Yep, prices starts to fall in late Sept for sports cars and convertibles. Best time to start shopping IMO.

I agree with you on the big gains in the financial market, the market in general is good across the board, people have jobs, they feels stable, they have more money to spend. Not only has the price on the 991.1 has gone up. The 997.1 and .2 has gone up a bit too. You can no longer get a nicely equipped 997.1 C2S/C4S for low 40's, it's creeping up to mid $40's now with no wiggle room. GTS has gone up the most, nearly 10K price difference.

Bringing this back from the dead... I traded my 991.1C2SM for a 997.1TTM early this year and couldn't be happier. Everyone harps about how the 997 is not much smaller than the 911, that is complete tripe. The 997 has a shorter wheelbase so turns faster at the expense of stability, is shorter, and has a much smaller front track (so doesn't look as bloated, yet with the wide rear has the Porsche hips and stance), and most importantly has a lower waistline, which makes it look sleeker and with less bloat. I also prefer the slightly less raked windshield as it is easier to get in, despite only being moderately tall (6'1).

The turbo had some issues to resolve, center console and center stack I had repainted, stereo to be replaced with either an Android unit or the fabled PCCM for 997s, shifter replaced with numeric racing, DSM controller for the suspension, and a heavier clutch. Doing a GT2 conversion for the clutch soon. With a Cobb tune and HFTs + exhaust, this thing fricking hauls... yet handles well (like a RWD, as that is how it drives most of the time) and has a more classic sports car feel.

Oh and the 997.1TTM is 3480lbs kerb weight, mine is lighter due to an AWE tuning HFTs and exhaust. Looking at it side by side with my G Body Outlaw, it retains some of the classic Porsche DNA. While my 991 didn't seem to. Don't get me wrong, the 991 is an amazing car, but it's much more of a modern GT.

Smart move. 991 is definitely more GT. The numb steering alone puts it in the category of never-classic for me.

Who says that - not the guys here...must be the guys in the 991 forum. The size difference is just one of the reasons the 997 owners here haven't moved on and don't plan to.

Agreed, I remember taking the test drive and thinking the door panels were dated compared to the 991, but when I got back into the 991, the steering felt completely numb and the car seemed to turn slower. That was the start... then the lower bloat, etc. Very happy and the 997 community up here in Toronto is tight. Like the aircooled community. The 991 guys / gals keep moving on or up, or other brands.
