Default New Owner / Suspension Q

Hey all,

New owner of an '01 Turbo. The car has 55k miles and is on the stock suspension.

And boy is this suspension stiff. I've owned a lot of sports cars and this thing is about to rattle my teeth out!

I'd like to accomplish two things with a new suspension:

1.) Much, much softer. I don't really plan on tracking the car. It's a nice day / weekend driver and the roads in Cincinnati are garbage.

2.) Lowered ride height.

Recommendations? Go...

I don't believe you have a stock suspension if you rattle your teeth out. The stock suspension is probably the softest out there (of all the 996 turbo options). How do you know it is stock? Do you have the X73 option?

Well, I guess I don't know if it's stock. It rides like an SUV (really high), so I presumed it was. Naivety at its finest, perhaps.

A lower ride height generally means a stiffer ride. The springs have to be stiffer to keep the car from bottoming out on the suspension stops with the reduced suspension travel lowering result in. Along with stiffer springs the shocks have to be able to adequately dampen the springs and thus the overall result is the car rides stiffer is more harsh.

Almost always then the stock suspension is the softest suspension. However, this stock suspension is pretty stiff. Has to be really to deal with a car capable of obtaining 189mph top speed. One doesn't want a floaty boaty stretch limo suspension in this case.

If the car has larger than 18" wheels/tires fitted you can consider going back to 18". Be sure the tire pressures are not too high. Often the tire pressures are set for a fully loaded car. A less than fully loaded car can do just fine with several 2 to maybe 4 psi less tire pressure. Experiement. Try 2psi less in both the front and back then after a while go to 3 less then 4 less. I think you'll know when you have gone too low. Or consult the owners manual and see if the there is a lightly loaded tire pressure setting or if there is any caution on going too low.

Too late now but generally convertibles have a soft ride, are a bit more softly sprung.

But if you want a cushy to the tushy floaty riding car the Turbo ain't for you.

Thanks, all. Really appreciate the information! I'll check tire pressures for sure. I'm on 18" wheels now - so it's not a wheel thing. Certainly knew the car would ride stiff - but just thought I'd see if there were any recommendations.

With 15 years of wear on the stock suspension, perhaps I consider replacing with new stock parts.

Forget replacing the stock parts. That set up sucked from day one.

If you want nice smooth ride with superior handling get the Ohlins.

Can you take a wheel off and take a picture of a spring/strut? It may help. I agree the high ride height is inline with a stock suspension.

I run the Ohlins and really like them, that said the stock vs stock spring rate is almost 4x the 6tt so depends what is more ideal, comfort vs control....
As I said over on 6SO, the spring damper combo is nice for normal street use
