Turbo body rusted
Hi guys my 2001 996 Turbo is in the garage for service and we have found a leak on one of the Turbo bodies.
Lots of labour involved to replace the turbo body/shell .
Car is fine when warm but blows a bit when cold.
All Turbo/exhaust bolts have been replaced.
Never heard of this. Has anybody had this issue?
Thanks

Hi, no i'm not mechanically useful...
Just wondering if anybody else has had this issue, just a shame as Turbo working ok, and not the usual "maintenance replacement" part.
Looking for advice on replacing Turbo or just do the body where the leak is.
Mechanic says it cannot be welded to repair.

For a turbo to leak it is likely not the cartridge but a seal on either side of the turbine shaft (leaking into housings) or a fitting feeding/draining oil.
That is a dramatic amount of metal to 'rust' through and considering its constantly getting an oil flow nearby rusting through just seems unlikely.

Cars that are driven all year where road salts are used can have turbocharger issues.
The failure is bearing housing rot at the turbine housing flange. The cast iron just erodes away.
My recommendation is to purchase a set of cores from Rennlisters or Ebay. Lower mileage cores will demand more monies.

Mechanic sent me these pics.
Will go and have a look myself Monday.
Car has been my daily driver for past 5 years.
Probably remove the turbo and get it refurbished but no rush.
Sounds just like the explanation a couple of posts back which makes me feel better. Every other repair I've had to do on the car over 5 years you can find a thread about it. First time I've heard of this!
