At the 1996 Detroit Auto show there was a 993 Turbo there. I got the poster and hung it up above my bed when I was 15.
Bought a 86 944 in 1999, which I still have, and my 996 Turbo 2 years ago. Couldn't quite gather the funds for that 993 Turbo though.

I went to the 1995 Detroit autoshow where they had the introductory 993's hanging on a vertical wall. I have a video of that autoshow somewhere. I never converted it from my video camera to DVD.

As far as selecting a 996, I already owned two aircooled Porsches and wanted a turbo. Went with the 996 TTS.

2001 Audi s4-->BMW E46 Phoenix yellow (urine color)-->996TTS,but...

Friend called from a Vegas pawn shop and gave 20 min to make a decision, no PPI no kicking the tires, just a few picks, mileage(28k) and an offer to match from Porsche Las Vegas. Best instant decision on a car buy. When it arrived it was filthy but cleaned up pretty well and it was one of the last S's made. 4 years later still in love with it.

I had two dream cars as a kid, 911 Yellow Bird, and a V8 Datsun Z. Well, I sold my project V8 Datsun Z of almost 10 years. I found that after i got it running and driving, it was hard for me to finish all the aesthetics. Most of my interests and enjoyment come from the mechanics of stuff, not really the prettyness. Also, I didn't drive it enough because it was really loud, smelled like gas and was a bit hairy at times. I wanted someone else to pick up where I left off and it went to a good home, a younger guy that lives less than a mile from me and he sends me updates.

I was happy with my daily driver, '12 FX4 with lots of projects at the house and hauling kids was great. We lost our foster kids back to their parents, and I figured that life was short, sold the truck and found my '02 on Ebay. The seller was local, we met up and got a PPI, and the deal was done.

My car is a DD, I've put about 14K miles on her in the last year, hard to imagine driving anything else. Love it!

i still have fond memories of my '95.5 UrS6. quick, comfortable, very tunable, loads of space... did everything an uber-sedan needs to do and did them all well. this was the car that got me into cars with turbos.

1966 Chevelle SS396 Convertible
2001 Allroad 2.7TT
2000 C230k sport
2006 MINI JCW
2008 987s (RS60)
2002 996TT

All of my cars have had a certain allure. The Chevelle certainly sounded the best, but it was sold two years ago to pay some of my father's medical expenses. I had a great emotional attachment to that car, as I owned it for over 30 years. In truth, though, it didn't drive very well - poor handling, terrible brakes and no safety systems (stock car, not a restomod). I stopped enjoying it to a degree, as it was too rare, etc. I still have the memories, and that's a good place to be.

Allroad was a great sleeper and awesome long distance car. The Benz was a great daily driver. The MINI was a lot of fun, special order, etc, and it turned out to be very crash worthy when it was totaled by a texting driver. The RS60 was unique and very well-balanced. Ultimately I sold it and got the TT.

I always wanted a TT. I really like the look, and I love the power. It does a lot of things well and is surprisingly practical. I thought hard about a 997.1TT, but I couldn't justify the $40k price delta. I drive it to work about twice a week (cummins 2500 DD). I have put about 30k miles on the car in 4.5 years. I am happy that I don't have a GT2 or GT3, as I don't want to worry about resale and miles and small stone chips and the like. I really enjoy driving the car. I'm fairly certain that I will keep it for some time (unless I suddenly come into 458 money - actually I would think hard about an FF in that setting). It does everything I currently want from a sports car, and it does it very well.

How I got to the 996 Turbo? I was looking for a daily driver, and this car that I told an acquaintance about four years previous had just been put up for sale, with little action. Didn't look at any others. Didn't consider anything else. Spent all of 3-4 emails, over about 5 minutes negotiating. Hadn't even driven one for 7-8 years, and only then on track (obviously at greatly reduced pace). Never even saw it in person until the money was changing hands. So happy two owners previous dropped $40K+ on the R Turbo conversion.

Since we're kind of going OT into the WABAC machine. Noticed the IROC races on Wide World of Sports in 1974. Noticed the 930 introduction a year or so later. Noticed John Buffum using a '73 RS for SCCA Pro Rally (my first racing discipline love). Ended up with a high school teacher who had a T5 356 Roadster. Who also brought the local and national PCA mags to class. Started hanging out at the autocross and time trial events. Hmmmm. My '78 Scirocco wasn't cutting it on the Time and Distance (aka street racing) rallies, so I scrounged up a '68 911 wannabe S two weeks after I got out of high school. Oddly, that 12 year old 911 was basically as new as the '03 R Turbo conversion I ended up buying......

1989 Saab 900s
1997 Audi A4 2.8 sedan
2004 VW Passat Wagon
2008 Toyota Prius
1985 Mercedes 300 TD wagon
2011 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI
2012 Audi S4
2013 VW Golf R (About to sell...want it )
2001 Porsche 996TT

Here are the cars, in order, that I've owned. Could have bought a 1976 912 in 2003 for $12k and that was the car that I wanted

Instead, I bought the A4 for the same amount...took me 12 more years to get what I really wanted...a 911. About to buy a second.

Always wanted a 911. Couldn't afford a 'real' one so I bought a NA 996. Liked it but lusted for a turbo. Found one with high miles that I got for cheap. No more IMS bearing worries. Love the boost. 700 hp is a good time.
