Yes...so I read this as some recent spirited driving with a bad downshift?

Im pretty sure you can trigger range 2 without missing shift. I have never missed a gear change on my car, but if I run it up beyond the marked 6600RPM redline on the tach before shift I am pretty sure it adds to range 2. My car has completely stock tuning. I've meant to do an experiment to check, but I am trying to avoid adding to my range 2.

Range #2's on a 996TT start at 7,250 rpm. That's a missed shift on a stock car.

So, how am I registering range 2 when I've not missed a shift since I've owned the car and it is 100% stock tuning?

Are you? You did not make that clear in your first post. How many range 2's do you have?

Not necessarily. Some say that the really catastrophic damages from a bad shift occur right away, so if it's still running strong 15 hours later it might not be a big deal. On the other hand it'd be nicer if it happened , say, 100 hrs ago.

You can register type 2s without a miss shift. I do it all the time. Some DMEs are screwy. I register type 2s but no type 1s which quit registering last year.

I have long suspected it, and this thread inspired me to research further. I checked it yesterday evening after some spirited driving and yes, it is. I will double check the exact number, but is above 1000.

No, they all have them. Could be used to negotiate based on it happening only 17 hours of run time ago? People have lots of conjecture on this and reading it will make you crazy. I don't remember reading about anyone who bought one with low type 2s that later said they had a problem directly related. If the car runs fine, you like it/it's a combo/set-up you've been looking for, I say don't sweat it.
Anything funky or unexplainable could be very expensive.
