One thing I didn't see anyone mention that can have a giant impact is the tire size you are running. A 996tt with the wrong sized tires will behave in a downright spooky manner.

do we have a commonly agreed upon 'wrong size' for 18s? 19s?

Yes, anything other than 245/40-18 and 315/30-18 is wrong

by "anything" other than did you mean 235/40/18 X 315/30/18? not so sure how a 245/40? fits on a stock 8" twist though i guess you can stuff it on? but that's not an optimal size on front?!

hard to make a case for oem gt2 sizes on 8.5 X 12 wheels e.g. 235/40/18 X 315/30/18 as being "wrong".

335/30-18 not a good choice for rear?

But how well does that work on the stock wheels... how does it fit with different levels of lowering etc...

(actually curious... I'm on stock twists with 7/15mm spacers and H&R springs)

Can't say i'm in a rush to roll this cars fenders (other two cars in the garage are rolled so i'm not to against it), without the spacers how did they fit (if you tested this).

it's a bit tall at 25.9". That means the front tire would need to be around 26 or 26.1" to work well with the AWD...and what 18" front tire is 26 to 26.1" tall?

i never ran that setup w/out them. i can only attest to running with them rolled. if you like the stance now? then i'd leave it, but with all the bouncing around i do they needed to be rolled w the 315/30 rear. even still i ate thru my rear wheel liner.

Late night humor, there are several other choices that are almost as good.
I had on a set of 19's in stock 997 turbo sizes last fall for a couple weeks that worked fine on the street but they made the brakes look small, fixed that last night
19 looks nice on these cars lowered but it's not my cup of tea for Seattle roads, the look, or the track.

I run GT2 sizes and yesterday was running 235/40s because I have an old set I want to burn up since I like the 245/40 better. From what I've read here, the same tires I run fit stock twists fine. The 245 provides less understeer and with my PSS10s lowered and -2.8 they fit with plenty of room, other than the clearance rear inner fender liners. There's a solution for that here that others have posted on and the liners are cheap. If you're not super low, they'd work.

Looks like I misread some tire specs... Would have to be a 265/40-18, 26.3-26.4"; doing math mentally so forgive me if it's wrong, but I think that is in the acceptable range of deviation... Fits on 997s, but I can't find any reference that it fits on the 996. Would definitely require some modifications...

I have found reference for a 265/35-19 fitting in front, which is 26".. Not sure if it'd be possible to get that extra .3" clearance.. Could potentially run a reverse stagger with the 19" on front and 18" rear. May not be worth the trouble now that I'm thinking about it more.

F1CrazyDriver and maybe a couple of others ran 265s out front. The details escape me now but fair odds that rolled fenders, aftermarket coilovers, adjustable lower arms, and probably an adjustable top mount plus GT2 Fender liners and maybe some spacers would've been involved. 265 fronts can also be made to fit on a stock Turbo with rolled guards and spacers though, as long as you don't much like turning fast.

Those running them will know more.

You can run whatever fits if it's RWD, right?

It's the AWD which is crazy sensitive.
