Default Double din or single din?

Curious if anyone who went with a double din radio and later wished they went with a single din, or vice versa?

I was pretty set on a double din and now having second thoughts. There really is no benefit to a double din. I'm worried it might look out of place on the older interior a 996 has and a single din in the same price range has a superior equalizer.

Starting to think to just do a single din and call it a day. I only care about bluetooth and HD radio. Don't care at all about cd/dvd or navi.

Any advice?

Trying to choose between these:

I have been a kenwood fanboy all my life. Thinking about switching to pioneer this time.

I contemplated this same question. I really like how this dash looks with a single din.

I feel like our dashes are sort of transitional from the old school looking dash of pre 996 to the more modern dash in 997. We can go either way but I much prefer the older look

I vote single din!

The trouble with just about every single din is they look out of place due to the cheesy plastic chrome, small controls and overall look. Pretty much the same for most double din but there are some that fit nicely like the high end Kenwood's. The factory used double dins so it's still period correct. Those Pioneers definitely will look out of place but it seems like you're answering your own question so do what you like.

Yeah. Agree about the single dins having too much going on and looking cheap. That is why I really like the Pioneer DEHX9600BHS, doesn't really have 12 different colors going on and the buttons are not chrome. That is the only single din that I liked and think it would look nice.

For a double, a 7" screen will eliminate majority of the buttons.

I like my Pioneer double din, it doesn't have any **** or controls at all just screen, easy to control on the go. I had to do a single in my old Rover and you have to be stopped to make any changes with the tiny buttons and scrolling. Name: photo314.jpg

Check out the Blaupunkt single DINs. They look more appropriate to the rest of the car.

I just installed the pioneer avh-x3800. The blue tooth phone, HD Radio and the Pandora integration with my android phone are great. I had really wanted a volume ****, but the Kenwood that I got that had it had issues an could not be replaced in a reasonable time. So I got the Pioneer and like it better than the Kenwood. I vote double DIN all the way.

I like the single din. The double DINs just looked forced to fit...

The benefit to the double din now is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I have a preorder in for a JBL Legend CP100. No cheese chrome plastic. No clunky, crappy user interface, and complete integration with my iPhone.

According to JBL's website, it won't fit a 2004 TT. What are you putting it into?

2003 TT. It will fit just fine. Double Din has standardized height and width. The only issue would be depth and it's actually not as deep as some double din head units, including the one that Third Reef installed in his car. The only reason they say it won't fit is because they haven't tried.

I love my double din. With the Porsche background it looks very OEM.

I really like to looks of this one. I was actually looking for something Android related. I'll need to read up on Android Auto.

I did an android unit in my '03 986. 996 should be the same install. I loved everything about it. Had all the bells and whistles at a fraction of the cost. It was $450 with wireless back up camera and dvr camera. So much bang for the buck. If you go Android you'll want to read up on xda-forums. Support is usually good from the Chinese mfgrs but the guys at XDA are way more knowledgable.
