Got any specs on this?
- is the screen + the controller (underneath) needed to make this work (i.e you need both, or can you just go wiht the screen?

I think I'm stuck with what I have to keep the period correct look, but I'm always looking at options (the original POS navigation is what I have)

I did see this kit which looks really neat - http://www.delreycustoms.com
- I can't link to the specific page, but they have a dash kit for double din whicih has the Porsche logo - looks OEM - just throwing it out there for guys who are looking for options.

Pretty cool (if super pricey) but "Not compatible with 356 or 996 models. Professional installation recommended."

It is not plug and play with a 356 and 996 but it can be done. And yes, super pricey.

It's an iPad mini custom fit into the stock 'horseshoe' trim with an aftermarket Pioneer head unit in the lower console. No reason you couldn't make it work with a stock single-din radio, but it would likely be through a fm modulator (eg. Scosche IPFMRDS) instead of direct USB. I think FM modulators have come a long way from the old days...

I think it's all about the sorunding plastic. Make sure you get that righ to make it look as stock as possible. Also I chose Pioneer as I could set pioneer illumination to the Porsche Amber like speedo dials. I am happy with the results.

Though there are not many other possibilities if you absolutely want to stick to the OEM radio, FM modulators are still not the way to go IMO. The FM bandwidth is nowhere near 20-20khz - and that is just inherent to FM. If you listen to the same song back to back piped in directly (such as USB or headphone jack to aux in) vs. an FM modulator you can def hear a difference. And you don't need audiophile ears. It's just not worth going through the trouble of an install and ending up with second rate sound IMO.

I too was very impressed with pfzb's setup and researched what I'd need in parts. One of the main criteria for me was an absolutely OEM look. In order to try to meet that goal, I would have chosen this as a head unit: http://www.kienzle.de/index.php?524&..._products=1844

After examining all possibilities, though, I decided to go with a double DIN Android head unit. I wanted to try to keep one unit only and I def wanted a volume ****. My goals were also to be ble to run apps like Harry's Lap Timer, have a decent nav, bluetooth, and, as mentioned above, OEM look and feel as far as possible. This is what I ended up with (just pushed into place as my car is still in re-assembly):

I have the unit rooted and will likely play with the look and functions sometime in the (distant...) future. I see no reason why something like this does not fit to a 996. I would not bother with the suncoast mounting kit, if you google "996 2 din installation kit", you can find the exact same kit minus the white "Porsche" script. Invest in a set of white "Porsche" brake caliper stickers and you will have saved quite a bit of beer money.

The one issue I had was that the Android unit was not double DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm) but, as it was manufactured in China, double CIN. I had to add about 5-6mm in width and 3-4mm in height by filing and reduce the mounting depth (inner frame) with a dremel. All in all about 2 hrs time that I did not have...

Def double DIN!

^ Very nice! Rooted? So there is dev support for this unit? Which one is that? What OS is it running?

Have you tried running Torque on it yet?

SimonK, that pioneer look great, if I decide to do double din, it would either be that pioneer unit or android like above.

"Vogz"....Did you have the JBL Legend CP100 installed? Do you have any after install pictures?
Thanks!

I like that! A very low key look. What model is that Alpine? Is it only a nav unit, and that's why you kept the factory head unit?

That legend is clean looking... But does it have 10 presets!?!? Lol it's one of the highlights of the OEM stereo for me.
