Default Oil to my 996 turbo Automatic

Hi.

I’m going to change all the Atf oil in my automatic gearbox. What is the best oil for my gearbox?
Mobil or Shell?
I need the full fabrications name.

Porsche 996 Turbo automatic, year 2002.
Best regard.
Bjorn.

I'd hold off on changing unless it's necessary. Heard you can actually cause more harm.

The Tip S trans in our cars is known as a NAG1. It was developed by ZF for Mercedes. It is used in several Mercedes models including the McLaren SLR and some Jeeps. It is not considered to be a great transmission but it is very durable and can handle tons of torque. Shell ATF134 is the factory recommended fluid replacement.

With transmission fluid the general consensus is to change it early, like 50k miles, and never touch it again. As Atrox wrote, changing it after 100k miles has caused problems for some.

Also if you do go through with this you should drop the pan and change the filter too.

Hi.
I have tuned up the car to about 600hp and my gearbox does not shift in the right time on the 3e´ gear when I do full gas, so I’m going to change Atf oil and filter, but there is a lot of oil out there.
I called Shell and spoke with a technician and he told me I need to use this one,( Shell ATF 3403-M115) but Shell does not sell that oil in Sweden. (Bought the car in Us Texas)
So you think ATF134 is the best to use? I have to call and see if this is for sale tomorrow.

What do you think about this ones?
Mobil ATF 3309 ?
Mobil ATF LT 71141 ?
Esso Type LT 71141 ?
Valvoline ?
Shell ATF134
Shell ATF 3403-M115
Best regard.

I changed the fluid in this trans when it was run my Mercedes. I used Fuchs fluid very successfully. Maybe you can source that brand in your country.

Shell ATF 134 is the proper replacement for Shell ATF 3403-M115. I was told this by Shell.

If you haven't changed the tranny fluid for a while I do get that it can be a gamble.
I change the tranny fluid every 30k or so miles. Redline D6. I bet my motor will go before the tranny

Yes, any of the oils listed in Mcbit's post will work in your trans.

Most current synthetic ATF fluids will meet spec. I have rebuilt several of the Porsche tip transmissions. They are all Mercedes 722.6 Five speed boxes. minor changes between 996 and 997 tip. I performed a complete BG transmission flush in my 112k mile car and now has 118k. No issues at all.
