Fuel gauge reads empty with 1/2 tank remaining
Okay, I've searched and I can't find this issue in past threads...
I get down to low fuel level warning on the gauge, but the tank will only take 9-10 gallons and the gauge reads full again. This is a recent issue - dating back only 3-4 months.
Am I the only one with this problem? Any suggestions?
TIA

I had a similar problem when my battery was weak and the fuel level was low(1/4 tank) for an extended period of time. I kept the tank full for a while, changed the battery and ever had this problem again. I now keep my car on a battery minder.

Try filling the tank and starting the car and runnnig it for few seconds. Then shut it down and turn the key to the on position but do not start. Leave the key in the on position for 2-3 minutes. Then drive the car as normal.
If that doesn't work fill the tank and disconnecting the battery for an hour then reconnect and repeating the 2 minute key in the on position reset.
If that doesn't work Bauer maybe right and you need a new battery.

If the power supply is interrupted by a discharged or
disconnected battery with the tank containing less than
19 l, the calculated value for the range on remaining
fuel in the instrument cluster will be incorrect or
deleted.
·If the tank contains less than 10 l, it is possible that the
fuel level warning light is no longer activated.
·If the power supply is restored with the fuel level at
less than 19 l, it is possible that the fuel level display
may subsequently display too much.
You might try re-calibrating the fuel system.
Refill at least 19 l of fuel; disconnect and re-connect the battery then the
fuel level sensor is in operating
range and its display precision is
guaranteed.

My fuel gauge was very erratic when I bought the car. I did the battery disconnect reset, with a full tank of gas, and that seemed to help out. Lately, the fuel gauge hasn't been coming down from full at all, even after a few hundred miles. I just did another battery disconnect reset, with a full tank of gas, and the gauge has started working again.

I think 10 gallons to fill up once the gauge warning light comes on is pretty much normal:

I am surprised when mine will take 11 gallons and that's usually many miles after the warning light comes on. The tank capacity is supposed to be 16.6 gallons, but it acts more like 13.

Well according to the manual for 2004 996TT (of which ALL are AWD), the fuel capacity is 16.6 US gallons (63 liters). Realize there is a hump in the tank. The sensor is in the top section of the tank and the warning light is a function of the theoretical estimation of remaining fuel, not an actual amount.

Or maybe the digital dash is just really conservative with its remaining miles estimate: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ml#post4349220. I have never actually run the car down to where the remaining miles read ---.

I had this same problem when I bought the car. The way it was explained to me was that the tank is kind of kidney shaped with a hump that acts as a reserve reservoir that holds some gas but still reads on the gauge. AND perhaps the fuel gauged needed recalibration. After getting a new battery and the car being disconnected, this problem stopped. Hope that helps.
P.S. also, I was told NOT to allow the gas to drop more than a 1/3 to a 1/4 low because the pump is cooled by the gasoline. (maybe this is why the reserve is made- to keep the pump submerged in fuel? I'm just guessing here)

Had this happen twice where Id filled tank and it read same as it had before filling. First time it happened I went into the gas station and told them their gas pump was broke or or they were out of gas. Started car later in the night and it was reading fine.
The gas gauge in these cars and hump in smallish tank combine for pretty sloppy readings. I just fill up more often; a big tank option for this GT type of car would have made sense. 28-32gal would be fine and you'd be able to experience different handling characteristics as the level drops.
