Default Trading air for water ?

Hi guys.

I wonder if a lot of you have sold their old but appreciating air cooled 911 and bought a more modern 911. I did last year ('85 to '01 TT) and a friend of mine did a similar move recently. In fact, he should have his 2005 C2 in his garage in a few days.

As far as I'm concerned, I think today's prices of pre-'98 911 are becoming ridiculous, and trading an old one for a new one for the same price, or even less, is a no brainer. But that's just me...

I tend to believe this is something we are going to see more and more, or it may have already begun.

Any thoughts ?

my dad replaced his 930 for his current 996tt...does not miss the 930 99% of the time
My dad and I both grew up around and love the air-coolers as well, but prices for the 'standard' cars don't make sense anymore for driver's IMO

I see a late 70s early 80s aircooled as a completely different car to the 996tt. I'd like to have both.

Depends on the air you're trading.
If I'm trading the SC/Carrera driver and got $30-50k towards something that is faster and handles better with modern conveniences...no brainer.
The clean 930 with provenance, gimme so much I have to sell, otherwise no way.

Bought my 95 993 at the right time and my 2003 996TT at the right time as well. Now I would not sell either. Two different driving experiences. Besides selling both would barely get me into a new 2016 base 911

Glad I bought and daily drove a 964 back in 2003 when it cost $15,750. I drove it for 5 years and put 38,000 miles on it and sold it for $15,600 to a wholesaler. Great car and very reliable. Fond memories. Now I am inoculated against the air-cooled bug. The 996 series is as good or better in every way - goes for both the '99 C4 coupe I daily drove for 2 years and the 996tt I have now.

I am not even remotely tempted to go back. The air cooled cars are great nostalgia pieces, but that's basically it. I'd like to find a nice Fiat X1/9 to sit in the garage because I had one as a kid - but other than an occasional Sunday afternoon drive, it's status would be simply garage art. That's what the air cooled cars are becoming because of a combination of skyrocketing value and technical obsolescence. So, people who want more from a car than garage art are going to consider upgrading to a newer model.

Sold the 930 for a 996tt and still have mixed emotions.

While I prefer the 930 body style and the increasing value that is hanging on the 930 at the moment, that is about all I miss.

The 930 was a workout to drive in the mountains. heavy nose, wrong gearing for tight roads, marginal heat, non-existent AC, sketchy wiring ... but man those sounds and flames.

The 996tt is so much easier to drive, so much faster (actually, too fast), more reliable, safer, and .... it has working heat and AC!

Went from an NA 993 cab, to a Turbo 996 cab. What others have said, looks were strong on the 993 but performance pails in comparison. Prices on the older cars seem to be doing much better than ours. But I would no hesitate to do it all over again!! Love my turbo!

I sold my 964C2 a few months ago. Lots of reasons for it, the fact that I could buy another Porsche with the "profit" was one. I was thinking I'd get a driver-condition SC or Carrera and bank the rest.. until I stumbled upon an 02 Turbo at a small dealership in LA. 5 minutes into the test drive I was sold.

The aircooled cars are awesome for their own reasons. I love them and still have one - but they're switchblades - the 996TT is a scalpel.

I don't think the run-up in prices on the aircooled cars is totally ridiculous, but maybe a little ridiculous - they were under-appreciated for a long time and are finally getting the shine they deserve (and maybe just a little bit more). I do think that the pricing on 996TTs is ridiculous. It is so much car - they're priced way too low.

If I had to keep just one, I'm not sure which one it'd be. I do know that I'm very happy with my decision, though.

I worked on too many air cooleds over the decades for me to cut loose with them--too easy and cheap for me to fix. But I know which of my fleet I was glad I pounded out 3K miles in on an AZ trip that ended this week. Probably more appropriate to have a tip cab for my purpose, but I'll take what fell into my lap.

Sold my '97 993 in Oct '14 after 10+ years of ownership to buy my current 996TT. Had wanted a 996TT for several years. Once 993 prices started eclipsing 996TT prices it was time to make the move. Sold the 993 for what I paid for it 10 years earlier. After buying my 996TT, paying sales tax and registration I still had a few grand left over in my pocket from the sale of the 993. And I think I gave that car away - sold it within 4 hours at full ask here on Rennlist.

No regrets selling the 993 to buy the 996TT. Wanted a do everything car and I think the 996TT is it. Its a car that I can do weekend track events in and travel cross country with the wife in comfort. A fantastic GT car.
