Track wheel tire set up
Hello all. Spend most of my time on the 997TT forum but wanted to solicit some feedback from the 996TT. A friend is looking to swap out his oem with a new set of track wheels and tires. Goal is to go lighter along with increases tire sizes.
What do you guys recommend as far as wheel widths and tire sizes keeping in consideration rolling diameters. Not sure what the front to rear delta is on the 996, same as the 997 >3%?

Tires sizes required for the 996TT AWD system are very different than 997TT.

Wheels? What wheel widths? 8.5 and 11's with 235/315 tires?
I realize this topic may come up often as it does on our sub forum. Appreciate the help

The rolling diameters vary by tire, but with NT-01s, yes, 235-40 and 315-30 are the right sizes for the stock 18" turbo twists. You'll also want some spacers (7mm is enough) for the rear to prevent rubbing. This also means longer wheel bolts.

OZ makes great light weight wheels in a variety of sizes if you want to run aftermarkets.

There is a set of OZ GT2 size wheels and near new R888's in the FS section for a steal....
Kevin,
Aren't CCW's a bit on the heavy side for a dedicated track wheel? Curious as I love how they look, but weight is an issue.

18x9x12. If buying new wheels, get 9s instead of 8.5s. If he is RWD, 245/40/18 and 305/35/18. If AWD, 245/40/18 and 315/30/18. The 305s will offer better performance than the 315s. NT01s are best bang for the buck. R888s=garbage.. CCW are not heavy wheels but tires rotate around on them no matter what you do which becomes annoying. Get Finspeeds with bead knurling.

Based on what? Dedicated track wheels should be treated as somewhat of a consumable item IMO unless they are high dollar.
For track wheels there are 3 variables: cheap, strong, and light. Pick 2, but if cheap is involved, make sure to make it part of routing inspections and buy a 5th to rotate in (and have as a spare)... Why buy a dedicated performance wheel for track time if it is going to be heavier than the OEM hollow spokes which should last a long time.

I own(owned) a set...1 trackday(and a couple months of ownership from new in box) without any large impact and one rear wheel is heavily out of dimension in about 5dimensions....if you can afford to scrap your wheels every event or two, go for it...I made my mistake. Had to buy a new one to complete the set and are now for street only on my dad's TT.....Finspeed, Forgeline, or CCW next for me.
The OZ was bent mostly in the inner barrel section and through the spokes/hub area, simply not strong enough for the weight/forces vs wheel width on rear of a 911...
My OEM GT2 wheels are still straight after ~12years and 75000kms...

I argued that as well, my Tirerack rep. was very helpful as always and tried to deal with OZ, who ultimately denied my claim. If they can't stand behind their (almost new) product (which showed no visible 'damage' or proof of a hit), then I will gladly never buy another OZ brand wheel.
Anyone want an almost new OZ potato to hang on their wall?
