Well after looking under the car today, they probably call it "rear" because the doughnut is way back by the tranny, not up front like I imagined.

You are mixing two different thread subjects. The subject GUIBO is a flex disk on 4 wheel drive 911 drive shafts.
The cross member is a big lump of steel that was changed to a big chunk of (lighter) aluminum in later models. Swap old out for newer save weight at the rear and go faster than anyone that still has the steel one.
