Hey Macster, some good comments.
I went over and looked at the car today. The car is extremely clean. I started it, but didn't drive it. It was boxed in by some other cars at the dealership and I didn't want to make a whole production out of a cursory initial check. It's only a mile or so from my house, so easy enough to go back.
Interestingly, I think the things that I might find hard to live with (or without, as the case may be):
I use my C2 as my daily driver for work. I'm usually on the road maybe a day or two a week, work out of my house the rest. But when I'm on the road, it's often 100 miles or more, so I rely on creature comforts. 2001 has no cup holder (I hear some of you cringing). No glove box (more cringing out there). And frunk is half the size of N/A (why is that? Whats in that funk space?). And, although the dealer installed a double-DIN Pioneer Nav system, he didn't install blue tooth. I put all that stuff in my C2, since I need it for work.
Obviously, these are items which have nothing to do with the phenomenal performance of this car, but they do bite into the DD practicality for me.
I read a lot of the 996 TT forums here, and get the impression that most 996TT owners are not getting hammered with maint costs, since the cars seem pretty reliable.
So, can I justify the additional costs for a more kick in the butt driving experience? Tough to say...

I would get a e46 M3 or C4s for the purpose that you plan on using car for. The glove box doesn't hold enough volume to be of big importance and you have door cubby's. There are after market cup holders and add blue tooth. You have all wheel drive using up frunk space. Most here disagree but I would not use my car for everyday or commuting= much better choices out there.

2002+ have cup holder and glove box. Bluetooth mod is easy. turbo can be a dd, or a 2-3 day a week work car. Gas mileage is quite good too (if you're not hammering it).
Plenty of nice examples here on R-list in your price ball-park. No white though.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of!! I really love that face-peeling acceleration. Sure, my 996 NA is quick, but it doesn't distort my face upon hitting the gas.

I agree, wait for the right one that you don't have any reservations on. As trivial as glove box etc. may be if, in my opinion if you don't have the "I gotta have this car feeling", especially after looking at it, it's not the right one for you.

Yeah, I agree. I'll see what the dealer says about trade-in for my 996 before making any decision. Sure would like a TT though! I love the white. So many silver ones out there, and I already have another silver Porsche.

12 pics and no interior shots?
Coolant pipe fittings blowing off is a concern on the GT1 blocks. My shop welded mine (2001), and fixed 3 other cars inside of a week. I believe 2 blew off and 1 was preventative.

Yeah, no interior pic on the web site. I went and looked at the car. Very clean, but someone installed a high end stereo system with I guess a big woofer behind the rear seat, so further cuts down on storage space. I'm not a high-end stereo guy. Talk radio AM is fine.
