Default rattles...

I have 2 rattles that I need to ask you guys about.

The first one is in the sunroof. It occurs at random intervals; I can go a couple of days without hearing it. I can stop it by either pressing up on the interior liner or opening and closing the sunroof.

The second one is in the area of the rear wheels. It occurs whenever I change lanes on the freeway and pass over the BOT Dots. It sounds like I have a stack of dishes sitting on the back seat.

So far I've had the car in 3 times for the techs to fix it but no luck. Can you help them/me out ?

Thanks

JCC...

I too had the rattles coming from the back seat. They finally replaced one of the rear speakers which eliminated the rattles.

But, I still have rattles coming from the front airbag area and CD holder which they haven't been able to solve yet. Arggg...two years already and it still rattles.

Thanks for the response Chris. I never thought about the rear speakers. Carlsen replaced the rear upper strut bushings last time around.

JCC,

I also have a rattle coming from the sunroof. It only occurs when it is open and I go over any sort of bump. Not sure what the problem is...but if and when you find out, let me know.

Thanks

I have the same rattles. Stephen from imagineauto was nice enough to send me Porsche's service bulletan on the issue. Apparently it is a known problem but, many shops do not want to fix it because it costs them a ton of labor hours. They have to take out the airbag and entire dashboard and then install teflon tape to minimize the creaking. If your car was built before January 23, 2002 it can be retro-fitted which is the interesting thing because my car was built March 2003 and according to bulletin my car should have te teflon tape installed from the factory. However, I have the same noises and it drives me crazy. As someone else mentioned, my sunroof also rattles and I have not been able to find a fix.

My frined's 02 has the roof rattle problem too!! It only occurs when the sunroof is open interetsingly enough. His car is scheduled to go in to service end of the month where I think they are supposed to remove the headliner and check once and for all....

Yea, that is when mine rattles as well. The other rattle from passenger front happens at all times and almost sounds like there are a bunch of rocks in the front of the car rolling around. It is awful Maybe I should just get the fabspeed super sport exhaust, even the resonance has got to be better than that rattling

Lou,

Are your rattles coming from the passenger airbag area? Mine are and my dealer refuses to pursue the rattles. He says there is some clause in the warranty booklet that doesn't cover rattles. I read it, but I find it very vauge.

That is exactly where mine is coming from. Again, the dealership has to remove the entire dash and airbag. It is a known service bulletin distributed by Porsche to its dealer network. I know it is effective for your car so if you need a copy PM your fax # and I will fax you a copy. I do not know how far it will get you or if they are required to fix it, I simply know Porsche knows about it and has offered a fix. I do believe though that it is their duty to fix it. BTW, did you buy your car at this dealership? If you did, I would raise some hell, talk to the owner, general manager and service manager, tell them you will not again buy a car from them. If they say fine, go to another dealership and quick. if not, you got your solution.

Lou -

With all due respect, I think your dealer is full of crap. If there's another dealer in your area, I'd take your business elsewhere. If not, I'd contact Porsche NA.

I had various rattles that Scottsdale Porsche took care of for free. They missed one (but could have figured it out the next time). Fortunately Todd at EVO fixed that one while the car was in for Stage 4GT upgrades - saving me a trip.

Now if I can just get the dealer to figure out why my lumbar support fills up completely every time I unlock the door (that is, fills up beyond all of my current key settings).

FYI, It was not me who had the problem with the dealer. Chris Y had the problem and I was offering him some solutions pretty much in line with your advise. Anyway take care.

Man, I'm really having trouble with my reading comprehension today. Second post today that I've misunderstood. Either I'm too busy, or it could be related to the fact that I received my PhD from the same school that Dexter Manley attended.

My worst rattle comes from the driver side rear window. That is just plain annoying. Other than that, creaking all over the place.

I had that one too. The local dealer (not the dealer where I bought the car) fixed it by reinstalling several panels in that general area. I believe they come loose over time.

They also went through the car pretty well, tightening up other areas. Right now, I have few if any rattles or creaks. Knock on wood.
