I wonder how many well maintained and non-tracked 996 Turbos have had engine failures?

Could be zero for a well maintained and never ran hard engine, but the same could probably be said for about any car. Any modern car given perfect care and only normal driving would be unlikely to fail IMO. Good luck to the OP on his repair, I could easily find myself in the same boat.

So many variables as to what happened or what if , just have to tackle it by the horns and rebuild or buy replacement. Either way it sucks

Oh wait! I just thought of a modern car which was suffering catastrophic failure at a rate so high, without driver neglect or tracking/racing, the whole fleet is currently parked waiting for new engines from the factory.
