I had a major service at dealership last week (Finland). I asked them to put in 5w-50 Mobil fully synthetic. They told me they use that oil on older air cooled models and wondered why whould I want heavier oil. 0w40 sure would protect the engine up here close to north pole IF doing plenty of cold starts. I told them I use my car only summertime and increased boost pressure from stock should make grounds for heavier oil. They agreed and why shouldnt they, it says 0w40 OR 5w50 in the manual.

My oil pressure is 0,3bar higher now. That is the only noticeable change.

Older air cooled allowed for 15w-50. The 5w-50 is recommended for water cooled in temps over 40 deg Fahrenheit.

What are you guys paying for oil? At home in Seattle I see it for about $8 a quart and last week I was in Los Angeles and needed a quart of 5W40 for my Mercedes and about crapped at the $12.99 price at Pep Boys!

That is good with free shipping. I just bought supplies to do brake flush and fuel filter on my 996t so added some stuff I didn't really need to get free shipping and paid 7.71 a quart for Castrol 5/40. If you spend 200 shipping is free from ECS.

Fantastic price! If only I ran 0/40!
Best I could find 5/50 was that $7+ per in 6 packs.

I buy every thing from amazon, including toilet paper and trash bags on their delivery service, so l dont mind paying for Prime.

[regular delivery of gas would be good too.]

they also do music, movies and books.

not to mention good prices on oil. etc.

wish sunset [or any Porsche dealer] would go amazon with prime.

Oil thread and I must contribute!

I used Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil for my last oil change as recommended by a fellow 996tt owner. I change oil once a year or 5k miles anyway.
