Cheapest route to more noise?
I said I wouldnt do this, I lasted 4 months.
I need more sound from this car. It does sound nice sometimes - on start up from cold, at full gas if the wind is blowing in the right direction, but other times I feel like it is powered by a small swarm of polite bees. I don't want it to scare children, but I want to be able to hear where the engine is so I can at least heel and toe..
I come from planet 964, where for $150 you can bypass either the secondary silencer or the cat and make it sound great in 30 minutes...but I know a nice exhaust sound is a bigger challenge with Turbos in general, and that 'more' noise doesnt necessarily mean 'nice' noise.
But are there any cheap fixes/bypasses for me to try, or are the options all really going to be 4 figures?

factory exhaust is one piece after the turbo's so unfortunately no muffler bypass can be run unless you get the saw out...
a set of straight pipes(no cats) will be your cheapest new option

Cut a 2" diameter circular hole straight into the bend that leads to the exhaust tips. Search for "996 TJW Mod". I did it, cost about an hour of labor and a hole saw (stainless is hard), and the increase in sound is wonderful. Slightly louder at idle, not much, but definitely noticible at WFO.

That sounds like what I am after. I was waiting for some joker to say 'drill a few holes in it'..but actually that makes sense, especially as it is near the tips so likely no issue w/ backpressure etc. Might be good if it was reversible too (like maybe I could bolt a plate back on to return to stock).
Tempted by the Techart exhaust for sale in Tx posted by Stilov, but apart from shipping, in the UK having no cats will fail annual emissions test..and as an ex-maserati owner, I have had enough CEL's to last a lifetime already!

Just get a full exhaust, you won't be happy with anything less... trust me ;-)

I had a catless stock exhaust before and that left me wanting more sound. The x-pipes sound amazing. That's catless in video but HFC would sound very similar. I've since added some larger v-banded mufflers and some trick resonators to eliminate the drone. The exhaust is perfect now IMO. Docile around town (no unwanted cop attention), wails at wide open throttle and no drone. Couldn't be happier.

The muffler bypass basically helps get the exhaust out of the turbos in the shortens route possible. It even dyno'd 10whp increase with the 2" holes drilled.
If that's not enough noise for you, an exhaust (x-pipes are popular) seem to be the next level.

I also hadnt quite worked out that for this mod you are drilling an internal part of the exhaust via the tailpipe using an extension..which means it is impossible to reverse? That might be a deal breaker for me..my turbo is totally orginal, seems a shame to do that to it. Other option is to find a used stock system on ebay to mess about with I suppose..

Three Wheelin'
I know this is an old thread, but want to report that I drilled out 2" holes on both sides, and the results are not that great. I have C4S with PSE, and the sound is an intoxicating growl. The turbo sound is just not on par, and I have to say a far cry from PSE. Rather weak. So I give this mod a 3 out of 10 stars. Worth doing? Yeah, but marginally.
