I read this in the Tech Q & A section of May 2013 Panorama and thought is would be good to add to this thread because it talks about "rebooting" the ECU after a dead battery to restore functions.

Car won’t start because of software issue as the 20 digit code didn’t match the key. Dead batteries can also be one of the reasons for not starting the car.
