Default MD/VA/DC Area Transmission Specialists?

Hey Folks,

What is a good shop in the MD/VA/DC area to have one of Kevin's clutch kits installed? I'm looking to do the clutch, fork, accumulator, slave, and probably the flywheel. I would really like to do with someone who has experience with transmissions. I'm pondering Chapman, Roger at Auto Therapy, and even the Porsche dealership. Any advice here would be appreciated.

I'd suggest a great shop in NJ but that's probably too far for you, if you want details PM me

Thanks guys. Yes, NJ is a bit far for me since I have to rely upon my wife to shuttle me back and forth. That won't win me any points with her! I am in the process of talking to Roger and also Ivan from IMA (thanks Mike Kelly).

Perhaps since he wouldn't be messing with the engine it doesn't matter. I would cross post your question on the 6speed mid-atlantic forum.

The problem is that all of these guys want to drop the engine....I'm not paying $3000 to $4000 in labor for a clutch install. I did speak with Ivan at IMA this afternoon and he seemed to be pretty dial-in. He made it clear that he does NOT drop the engine---that's a good thing. I don't want to pay an extra 10 hours in labor for something that isn't necessary.

Also John I doubt they're quoting 3-4K to install a clutch but unless the engine is propped up in the chassis when the transmission is removed it's simpler to remove both.
You almost have to get the engine nearly out to obtain space for the trans removal ,it's easier on the later cars but still similar, the clutch of course is attached to the engine not the trans...Bert

Bert,

Yes in fact this afternoon two Maryland shops quoted me $3000 to $3,700 (to be exact) in ONLY labor costs to install a clutch. My local Porsche dealership quoted me $4,700 to install a GT2 clutch (that did include the parts)---and close to $4,000 in labor to install Kevin's UMW clutch kit. That would be a $7500 job when you add in parts and labor. Good grief! The reason that was given to me was because they had to drop the engine and it required a solid 30 hours. That is insane.

Only two of the shops that I spoke with do not drop the engine---Chapman Autowerks and IMA. All others do and do in fact want $3K to $4K to do so in ONLY labor costs. I think one of these guys is going to get the job.

For non-OEM parts, IMHO your better choice is IMA over Chapman.

I didn't call them yet. I talked to Roger at Auto Therapy, Ivan at IMA, and two Porsche dealerships. Every one of them would be between $5K and $7K out the door for a clutch, slave/accumulator, and fork kit---add in a flywheel and tack on another $1K. All of the above is at minimum $3K in labor---even for just the clutch. The DC area isn't cheap.

I think I need to make some more calls. Good grief.

30 hours for labor sounds high, IMO. I cant see 30 hours labor going into this job. Are they counting the time the car sits on the lift also? 30 hours is 3 10 hour days working on the car!!

Obv. The clutch accumulator and the slave are different jobs. The accumulator ,IIRC, was a 1-2 hour job. I'm not sure on the slave cylinder, but that's pry another 1-2 hours, plus bleeding and purging the system.

I'm going to contact my indi this morning to get some insight on his book hours for this type of work; I'm sure it will be on my list of things to do. When my indi did the IMSR on my 00 Cab, he quoted 8 hours labor, total. He propped the engine and dropped the Tip( which is little more work than a 6sp).
