having intermittent abs/psm cels "go away" is rarely an indication that whatever issue that caused it in the first place has been repaired or eliminated. cleaning the maf is a temporary stopgap measure at best... and yes, the maf is highly sensitive to voltage spikes such as those caused by an increased rev limiter on a tuned car, such as i have. eg. anytime i peg the rev limiter, i fry the maf, and no amount of cnc cleaner will remedy a fried diode..
i'm wondering if you're actually clearing the code(S)? or are they just not showing up as per your recent post after maf cleaning. if you arent clearing them? even though they don;t appear at every startup? they may be ( probably are ).. stored. hence the intermittent appearance of them.. and don't count on a "cleaned" maf to last or operate for as long.. as it should. GL w it though.
For a few months now, I’ve been dealing with intermittent ABS/PSM warnings. As these have become more frequent (ie every time I drove the car), I decided to pull trouble codes with the Durametric. Here’s what I found:
4201 Front right speed sensor - signal implausible.
or 4200 Front right speed sensor - op, circ./GND/+ short.
5525 Incorrect data transfer with DME master control unit.
Long and short of it: replacing the wiring harness fixed this issue for me. Pics and details through this link to my car's blog:
I'm knee deep with my ABS/PSM failures after replacing the front right speed sensor today and it didn't fix the problem (4200 Speed-sensor wire, front right). Now my indy wants to go right at the ABS Module instead of trying the wiring harness route. He's been phenomenal so far but I'm not sure I want to go that route quite yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
No. I didn't think I needed to since I'm not getting any errors other than the 4200. Am I wrong? It sounds like I should clean or replace the MAF anyway since it's likely 16 years old.
Update - the PSM/ABS error occurred after 20 minutes of the first drive. Checking the code it was still 4200. However, I've had 3 drives since the initial fail and haven't had the code pop and have had pedal pulsation only once (very minor). I'm hoping the ABS module had to integrate with the new sensor and that now it's fine.
Thanks Carlo, that will likely be next. Since my last update I did have a failure on Saturday, backing out of my driveway during the first drive of the day. No failures since but I do get pedal pulsations (3-4) periodically.
Still having the issue. So far I've changed the Speed Sensor, MAF and Break Light Sensor which leaves the Wiring Harness and the ABS Module. From what I can tell my car has never been lowered so that throws some doubt on the harness. So now I'm looking at ABS Modules for $1200-1600, PN ABS Hydraulic Unit - Porsche (996-355-955-51)
Does anyone have any feedback about Sunset Porsche, ECS Tuning or Auto Atlanta?

I'm replacing the wiring harness this weekend. Fingers crossed!
I am having the same issue. The speed sensor was replaced and the ABS ring was checked and ok and still have the ABS/PSM warning light. They are checking the wiring from the sensor to the module today. I have also asked them to check the brake pedal sensor/switch. I really don't want to buy an ABS module. The cheapest I found was $5000.
If you end up having to purchase an ABS module please let me know especially if you can get one at a good price.

Have you thought about having it rebuilt at BBA Reman? I had my BMW unit rebuilt and it saved me a bundle of $; plus it comes with a lifetime warranty.

I haven't gotten to that point but if I do I will look into this.
