Default Clutch advice...

Will need a clutch next year (most likely). Should I go with factory TT GT2 or an aftermarket one? I dont need to drive the car every day but like to take it out at least for 2-3 times a week mostly short distances. What should I do?
Thanks.

Do you have modifications? If no, I'd stick with stock.

No mods yet but will definitely put bilstein pps10 in the near future and then who knows if I will get the bug and start with some other mods there are some nice asphalt patches here in Colorado and the elevation really helps with the turbos. I guess I am debating over a GT2 and TT clutch, can some one elaborate just a bit on the major differences between the 2. The on my TTS is sluggish and some what light.
Thanks.

My advice is to try to try a car with a GT2 clutch or a Turbo with the mod. I got a chance to sit in work the clutch -- could have had a short test drive but I declined -- in a GT2 at a local dealer a few weeks (months?) back and the clutch was a bit too heavy for my tastes.

While the Turbo clutch is overboosted and not as communicative as say my 02 Boxster's clutch I get along very well with the Turbo clutch. While I wish it were as good as my Boxster's clutch I think I prefer it the way it is compared to the way that GT2 clutch felt.

All I can say it you should try the GT2 clutch/clutch mod before you buy it.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I just replaced my clutch with the GT 2 clutch last month. It it is slightly stiffer and a bit more sensitive during release. This could be be just the new pressure plate? I would definitely would not describe it as a heavy feel.

Note: The GT-2 pressure plate came with the wrong bolts for the 996 Turbo. We found this out after installing the transmission; the engine could not be rotated, the bolt heads were to high and were binding against the transmission case. We had to take it apart and install a set of bolts with shorter heads. I am not sure if there is a difference between the GT-2 trans and the Standard Turbo or if the wrong bolts were shipped?

There is some mis information in this thread. The 996TT and 996GT2 clutch systems are similar. They share the same Pressure plate and dual mass flywheel. The difference is in the clutch disk. The GT2 clutch disk is not sprung. It has a solid center hub, where the turbo uses a sprung hub. The sprung hub absorbs the shock when you shift and rduces the load on the dual mass flywheel.

One thing to consider when changing your clutch>> these cars are piling up the mileage. Anyone that has close to 60K should consider a new dual mass flywheel.

For my customers that have a performance tune, should consider my reinforced pressure plate option with either the factory disk, or GT2 clutch disk. The cost for this kit is $1,645.00 A new factory dual mass is $895.00 (additional).. Of course swapping out to the factory single mass flywheel is a great choice.

The vagueness that you are feeling is due to the over boosted helper spring in the pedal. I replaced the factory spring with a much lighter one and it significantly improved feel. It does make the pedal stiffer, but not overly so IMO.

Do a,search in the 996 forum for a DIY. It's easily reversible if you don't like it.

If your clutch is not yet slipping, you may not need one. Properly driven, a clutch can last a very, very long time.

Thank you were does one get one if I decide to go with that. Tell you one thing the guys at my AD tell me I dont need one yet and that puts me at ease for a while it will give me a chance to set my priorities with the car and I will go with a set of Bilstein pss10's first. Also I have driven fast manual transmission cars prior to the Porsche never had to actually pay attention to the tachometer I find it extremely helpful with this car and definitely feel the improvement in my driving performance.
