Default 17" wheels for Winter?

Hi guys,
I have searched this forum and found that some 17" wheels will fit the TT. They offer several advantages for Winter use: price, pothole resistance, availability. I am looking at a set of Cayenne wheels that are 7.5J x 17 ET 53. Does anyone have any actual experience fitting similar wheels to their TT? I know that conventional wisdom is 17's won't fit, but apparently they do. I am looking at spacer recommendations, etc.
Thanks,
Dave

From the Porsche 996 The Essential Companion book I do not see 17" wheels listed for the Turbo. Just 18" wheels.

Your local Porsche dealer probably has a wheel/tire brochure on its literature table that gives wheel/tire sizes, models, and tire choices for all models of Porsches.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I would be very surprised if you can find a set that will clear the brakes.

Thanks guys. I understand it is surprising, but 17" wheels definitely can be fitted. My question is for those who have done this, what spacers, offsets, designs have been successful. Again this is for Winter use only, where I am happy with a narrower, lower profile snow tire.
See link on 17's in Winter:

Thanks,
Dave

Well, I visited TireRack and 18" winter wheels/tires come up for my 03 Turbo.

While I can force the size to 17" it was not clear I could custom select tire sizes to fit the 17" wheels and that the 17" wheels would work on both axles.

A phone call might have this sorted out but I do not have the time to do this and do not want to waste Tirerack's time for what is just a call to gather info for something I would never buy.

(Where I live/drive winter tires are summer tires...and were I needing winter tires I'd just buy something available off the shelf.)

18" winter wheel/tire sets start at IIRC around $800 and require as best I can tell no spacers, custom offsets, etc. to fit. The tires are a bit narrower than the summer tires too which of course is preferred for winter use.

Thus I fail to understand your desire to go to the extra trouble and risk to fit 17" wheels/tires to the car when 18"s are available off the shelf for a reasonable price with no extra hardware required and have the best chance of year after year having a good selection of winter tires to choose from.

However, it is of course up to you want you want to do.

Best of luck. But hurry. Winter will be here before you know it.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Thanks, Macster.
The best deal listed on Tirerack for 4 wheels and tires is $1700 plus shipping. I can get get 17 x 8's with tires for less than $1000 and have better road traction with the narrower rear tires and higher profile for Winter pothole protection. That is all assuming the wheels fit.
I may just bite the bullet with Tirerack, but the 17's seem to offer some advantages.

Porsche themselves recommend wheels/tyres for summer and winter on the 996. A quick goole of "Porsche winter tyres" and it is about the 5th hit, direct link to their info pdf's.

What effect will not using recommended wheels/tyres on your insurance?

I don't know, biglicks. I'm pretty sure Porsche does not recommend 20 or 21 inch wheels either. I also think 17" wheels with snow tires in Winter would be a relatively benign modification compared to other performance items listed here.
Thanks
Dave

I wish it were true. I think it means that our insurance premiums already reflect a certain amount of diverse modifications whether your car has them or not. Insurance companies don't give you anything for free.

Strosek original monoblocks.
OZ Italian.

They are the little brother of these 3-piece.
