bumper repaint
Was thinking of having my bumper repaired/respray due to multiple holes from front tag (idiots with a drill lol) but all the horror stories about paint not matching up scares me.Also I see a lot of people with after market bumpers and rear spoilers etc how come people do this if its so hard to match paint. Thanks for input.Randy

Not hard if you know how to use a paint gun. I paint RC airplanes from WWII to modern jet fighters. I use PPG paints. I take the gas cap and have my paint supplier mix a pint. I use PPG DBC base coat, DBC 500 clear base and DBC 2021 clear coat. The paints are expensive, for example to paint a bumper it would cost me just in materials about $250.00. The bumper must have a flexible additive if not the clear will crack. Since the rear bumper is subjected to removal for service of engine, the clear coat must have that additive in it. Guess I am lucky because painting that bumper is not cheap. It has to be wet sanded then buffed. Find a reputable body shop is all I can say.

Glasurit and Spies Hecker are the oem paints. I've read somewhere PPG matches better though. I know of some high end shops that use PPG exclusively. There was a thread on a viola 996 cab that had the whole front end painted with the PPG system. Color makes a difference too. Metallic paints have flakes so the painter has to match the density of the flakes to the adjacent panels. I've read arctic silver and carrara white may be the hardest to match. I'd go with a shop that has done a few Porsche 996.

To make it clear lol they painted bumper quicker than I thought as I droped it off Thursday and they said it would be Monday for paint and figured I had the weekend to ponder my decision . O well turned out well Im sure as I said the guy doing clear bra work is very picky like myself.Randy

Hopefully, they removed it and painted it. If they just sprayed it on then more than likely no flex additive on the paint. I guess if you took it in to prep it for the clear bra that's fine.

PPG matches excellent! That is why most shops use it. The water based stuff is extremely expensive. The regular PPG stuff is dangerous to the unprotected user. Once the materials are mixed they become toxic when sprayed.

Yes they used the flex agent, these guys do a lot of bumpers for dealers on high end cars so Im a sure they did it right and was told by my bra installer he removed amd reinstalled the bumper himself.

I could have had they not drilled two extra holes for front tag and also the screws pulled the surface of bumper out slightly. I did not want four plugs.
