2003 tt and 2nd gear pop out
i have a deposit on a 2003 996TT w/ 60k miles and will be picking it up monday. i just saw today the threads about the issue of the 2nd gear pop out. is this something that i need to be concerned about in this car? thanks, gary

after dealer gave me quote of 2000 to do leak down and compression test i had PPI done that didn't discover any issues. from what i gleen from reading threads the pop out issue only occurs on occasion and doesn't lend itself to detection with PPI. i guess my thought is that since car is nearly 10 years old if it was a problem it would have been addressed by now.

I discovered the pop out issue after purchasing my 02 TT. With only 15k on the ticker, I didn't figure there would be major issues but not so. It manifests itself usually when going downhill when transitioning on or off the gas. Have learned to live with it as the dealer said there are no upgraded syncros to replace the weak ones with and that the problem can likely reappear.

the problem won't re-appear if when the transmission is rebuilt to replace the worn synchros they re-position the gear stack with shims. or the detent mod has also been known to help prevent the issue but not if it preexists. when porsche discovered the propensity toward failure of the 2nd gear dogrings which can become "rounded" after a couple of dicey engagements, they decided to re-position the gear stack placement, so as to more firmly engage the gear. the later porsche tech docs go over this.
it's annoying to live with if you must, and usually does manifest only when decelerating downhill in second gear. you keep your hand on the shifter while in second downshifting to continue second gear engagement. lot's of fun.
i had mine rebuilt twice in my 02 both times under warranty, after a minor and temporarily adverserial engagement with pcna.

Brock you have been fed misinformation. 02996tt is correct. To cure the problem, you must fix the actual second gear. Alot of the rebuilders are shiming the gear stack. The best way to cure this is to get the proper gearset. If you shim the gear, you will have issues on the backside of 3rd and 4th if you push it too far. Alot of the gearbox shops are selling the 997TT mainshaft and gearsets as the better fix.
If done correct one can have good long term results.
