Some things are unclear here,at least for me. At which point are you going to deal with the actual owner of the car? Or you'll be dealing with the mechanic only in the seller's name? I just don't understand...maybe it's just me,but why do you need to sell your 40K car through the mechanic? Because that would put the buyer at ease since he's a Porsche specialist and knows this car? How should I know it's not true that in fact the actual owner is selling this car for 35K and told the mechanic ' whatever you get on top of that is yours ' ? Which shouldn't be a problem for you if the mechanic is making money on this deal since you think that the price you're paying is right. But what should be a problem is the fact that the mechanic now has all the interest in the World to tell you that this car passes his inspection!
Even if I'm wrong about this guy my advice still is :
1) Go drive it and walk away!
2) If you decide to buy it,make arrangements to have it sent for a PPI at a Porsche dealership during the week, preferably not the one that knows this guy.
3) WALK AWAY FROM THIS DEAL! Seriously, even most members here that are into serious modding, when it comes to buying one, they are still looking for a stock one!!! Now,why do you think that is? Some will say because they like to mod according to their own taste. This is true, but it is not the whole truth. Modified cars could mean track usage, abuse etc.
You're buying a used 10 yrs old car,so if you don't want problems down the line, you need to find a nice stock one with plenty of maintenance records.
Once again,good luck man!

With all due respect, many cars are found by asking your local Porsche mechanic. Yes it is a 10 year old car but the price is very fair if the car checks out with even a few problems. The modding can be a concern if the motor was tweaked to within an inch of its life but if it was modestly boosted these motors can take it no problem. They were derived from a race car after all. I am not saying don't be cautious and have the car thoroughly inspected but also take everyone's advice with a grain of salt. If I would have listened to all the negative comments I heard when I was trying to buy a car a few months ago I would still be looking and not enjoying my car today. Life is full of risks and buying a 10 year old super car isn't a practical choice for anyone but who cares. It is very likely you will buy the car and have to correct some issues right away for a few thousand bucks, count on it. If you want to be totally safe go buy a Honda Accord but somehow I don't think that is one of your dream cars.

With all due respect as well, did you end up buying a modified car?

Never mind...I know the answer already : https://rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=689852&highlight=Mmporsche

04 with CPO? Nice risk you took there...

Did you buy the first one you looked at?

Never mind that either...I know the answer to that one too :

I apologize for apparently upsetting you with my post. The purpose of my post was to say that you begin to receive so much advice that you end up thinking nothing is a good choice and second guessing everything. No, I didn't buy the first car because after it had been inspected it required around $9K in repairs ASAP and it was $42K '01 and the seller was not willing to budge on price. Also, I did not suggest he forego an inspection.

No, I bought the second car I looked at and yes, I found a CPO car but also paid significantly more than what is being asked for this TT. I didn't know the car was a CPO when I found it but it had the equipment I was looking for and color. I was only searching for a white TT and there were only 3 for sale in the US at the time on Autotrader so I had very limited choices.

Finally, I was convinced from all the posts I had read that I wanted a stock car but now that I have mine I have already installed PSS10s and different wheels and am looking for a new exhaust. Everyone knows you get pennies on the dollar for mods so buying a car that has them well done is a better use of your money if you plan to do them anyway. If I was to do it again I would have bought a car with the mods I am now spending out the nose for on mine and saved a bundle.

Hey Mm!
No reason to apologize,I'm not upset at all! I should be apologizing...
The bottom line is we're all here to give this guy our best advice so that he can make the right choice. He's free to pick any course of action after reading these posts.
All the best Mm,hope you're enjoying your TT!

Common threads to note from all of us:

PPI. A perfect sounding car to all of us on line might fail a PPI miserably.

A car we all feel is sketchy may be a sweet deal.

Crash damage is a huge avoidance issue in my mind if the frame is an issue. Toe-in in the rear can wear the tires medially...not sure about the fronts. On the other hand, if you convert it into a track monster, getting a big cost decrease by getting a salvage car may make sense....

Anyway, key is the PPI and realizing it is a complex machine that was 120-145k new.....and is now 10 years old.

If it was lowered below GT2 specs, I can understand why the tires are wearing on the inside. Anytime you lower a vehcle beyond specs the camber has to be adjusted to compensate for the lowering and the changes in the actual wheel angles. So if this car has the camber pulled in all the way that only means you would have to get a kit to pull it in even more! Of which these kits are pretty pricey for a TT.

LMAO! So true; here in SoCal women don't look twice at you anyway, so a Porsche sure won't help. Which works out just fine with me, since I drive my car because I like it for the fantastic machine it is. Only people who pay attention are the other middle aged guys at the gas pump. Wife doesn't have to worry.
