Do you think the 991 platform will be a major performance boost over the present racing iteration?

Agree - people buy 996 Turbos for different reasons not necessarily based on any racing outcomes! But racing made Porsche, it was the foundation of their success and success in the future. Hence under VW they will be concentrating on sports cars and hopefully continue to win races.

Yes, I have driven the 991 - the engine is in the same place as before [i think -- it cannot be seen from the ever smaller compartment lid.........................]

Yes. However, that doesn't mean I enjoy the street version of the 991 more than my 996tt.

I got to spend half a day in a 991s in Houston. It was a great car, but I still was glad to get my 996tt bck at the end of the day.

But the car handles much better than previous models; the engine placement is much less of an issue now. Besides, there are some performance advantages of the engine being in the back.

More on the engine placement...I personally enjoy the handling characteristics of my 996 Turbo (engine in the back). I don't track my car so I couldn't care less about lap times, and I don't street race in the mountain curves either. A mid-engine "911" wouldn't interest me. Any future Porsche racing victories will have zero impact on my buying decisions.

My radio ***** are not sticky. It's probably because I seldom touch them.

Default 2006 Boxster S Radio ***** and Heater Controls

I have deteriorating heater control ***** and have had to replace the radio ***** that became sticky.
I wrote Porsche North America with typical results: "Sorry... trim items not covered by warranty..."
My car has less than 18,000 miles, garage kept since new and the interior items are slowly going to pot!!
My Toyota Highlander, 2009 has not one such problem!

My brother's 2005 911 has had the same problems.
According to John Paterek, Paterek Brothers in Chatham, NJ this is very common problem with 2005-2009 Porsches and Audis. :-((
Any ideas on how to fix the heat control switches?

How much longer the 911 design can last? They have lost their competitive edge with Corvette, BMW and Ferrari on the race track and the 4.0 litre flat 6 may have reached the limit. It certainly appears that the engine location will need to be changed.

Has the timeless design of the Porsche 911 gone or will Porsche use the 911 shell with a competitive mid engine to reproduce past racing glories?

Food for thought.
Without the Cayenne, Porsche would have ceased to exist. It is the best selling Porsche model of all time and is incredibly profitable to the company. All the Cayenne profits allow Porsche to continue to build low volume, limited market sports cars like the 911. I wouldn't hold my breath on an engine location change either.

It's not my idea - it's Ferdinand's grandson.

Call him up if you don't agree.

I have a friend that has a Ferrari 360 with this problem in ALL interior rubber bits (radio *****, heater A/C controls, vent surrounds, etc). It looks like ****! At least we dont have that many rubber pieces to worry about.

IIRC someone here a while back posted about toying with the idea of a CAD aluminum/billet **** design. Now that would be cool!

Default My 2006 Boxster S Deteriorating Heat/Fan Control *****

My car has less than 18,000 miles, garage kept and the soft interior switches are slowly peeling and deteriorating! Sent letter and pics to PNA and got a phone call saying how sorry they were that this is happening, BUT that Porsche will NOT pay for repair! See my pics of the parts that are affected.

Yes, its really bad.

The plastic pieces seem to have been coated with a rubbery solution [why?] and this is what becomes sticky then starts to breaks down.

Luckily for 996 owners i think the 2 radio ***** are the only ones affected and $4.00 fixes that.

Those marks look more like gouges/cuts caused by fingernails (or the key in the case of the ignition switch).

Don't lend your car to Edward Scissorhands anymore. That's as bad as I've seen.
