I assume you are talking about the hoses. From the pictures it looks like they are decomposing. Its hard to tel from pictures though. Do they feel powdery?

PPI is a good idea if you are thinking about buying. My 04 has the original hoses and they are still shiny and clean despite the fact that I don't do anything to them.

Those don't look like stock hoses. Again hard to tell. You might see if the seller did something stupid like replacing them with cheap Chinese "upgraded" hoses.

Looks to me like someone used a "protectant" like armorall on them. After the stuff dries out, it gives rubber a brown color.

ditto on the dressing then the dust acumulation. Clean them up with WD-40 and then use a good protector on it. The hoses for that 996 turbo, and you might as well replace all of them run about 35.00 each, and I believe there are four of them.

IMO, that would hardly be worth the effort and expense if there is nothing functionally wrong with the hoses.

That would be my guess as well.
FWIW, I would never buy an ArmorAll product or any vehicle that has had ArmorAll used on it. Horrible stuff.

Agree. A bit of dryness on the hoses is normal. If the intake hoses look 'bad' the OP had better not get under the car and look at the radiator hoses.

I was taught that as long as the hoses do not compress too readily and are showing not signs of any leakage (much easier to spot of course with radiator/coolant hoses) to leave the hoses alone.

In some extreme cases -- at least with coolant hoses -- one can squeeze the hose with his fingers tips pressed in at the bottom of the hose and near where it connects -- which the area that goes bad first -- and poke a finger through the hose.

I doubt the intake hoses would ever get that bad.

I'm not even sure I'd make any attempt to clean the hoses to make them look 'better'.

In short if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Try mineral spirits on a rag and wipe them down and see if they come back to the black.

I guess I am old school on replacing the hoses. I'd spend the bucks to replace them, rather than sit by the side of the road and have my wife call me an idiot four not spending 150.00. And perhaps, the aviation side of me steps in as well, if you assume that one hose is bad, and assume that all four were built around the same time, same factory, and subjected to the same cooling heating cycles, and have the same MTBW..it just makes sense.

It has not been established that the hoses are non-functional, or are deteriorating in any way. Replacing them because they are dirty or have some discolored surface protectant on them would be like having your car repainted because it was dirty.
