Default 996 TT Reliability

If you find a 996 TT that has been properly maintained, it will likely serve you and your husband well for many years to come. Mine is a daily driver and it is as reliable as any car out there, plus it has a performance factor you don't find in many other places.

If you find a car that has had the rear spoiler mechanism, the coil packs, and the clutch accummulator replaced you should be good to go. Check for the second gear pop-out issue as well.

Opinions vary, but an aftermarket warranty can be a good thing if you find the right one. It covered the items listed above on my car and some other things.

Get a thorough PPI and use it to negotiate the best deal for you. Please warn your husband that boost can be very addictive!

Find the right car, enjoy the ride, and don't look back.

What's on top of the steering column, just below the dash?

The best advice I was given when buying a Porsche was, buy the car based on 3 things, condition, history and condition. It does look good in the pictures though.

I looked for that color interior forever and never could find one in good shape. Now they are popping up all over the place.

Looks like the right front intake and splitter have taken a few shots. The splitter is pretty common and easy to replace. Might get the story on that intake though and make sure there isn't any other hidden damage.

Ok so looked at one today, the silver one in the pics. So it had the engine light on, the salesman said it has an intake leak that he hasn't had time to get fixed. Also when we got back from the test drive there was a burning smell from the engine quite strong. On the plus side it did get a new clutch 1500km's ago.

Any thoughts???

The smell could be all manner of fluid leaks created during the clutch swap. An intake leak giving an engine light, possible but the car would be running like cr::

Do they have receipts on the clutch swap?

It seemed to be running ok.

He said all the paperwork i.e receipts were at his other shop

I think I will keep looking.

Yup. ..I would move on. Read my original post...engine light, smells, and lack of receipts. If it was an easy fix, it would've been fixed if this is a dealer or mechanic.

Oh. ..not sure about your area, but in Southern California, it is not uncommon for small private dealers to fabricate service receipts. Sad...

Ok! update. I have found one, 2002 black with low KMs 32 to be precise. Getting a PPI (check me out) done on wednesday but the place where I'm getting it done is saying i should have a compression test done as part of the test. Is this necessary??

Yes, you should. It's expensive, but getting a motor with compression problems is a lot more expensive.

Let's assume that you are going to buy the car if the PPI, including the compression/leakdown test come back ok. I would strongly recommend that you have them replace the plugs and coil packs while they are there. Part of the reason the compression test is expensive is that there is a lot of labor to get to the plugs, which have to be removed anyway for the test. Coil packs are at the same location. Plugs and coil packs need to be replaced at 30k miles - I know that this car has less than that, but there are 9 years on these parts in an '02.

Good luck!

Jon
