Default Shifter cables

My car has 80,000 miles now – runs like a dream. However this has now happened to me three times in a last month; when on full throttle and I change from 2nd to 3rd I miss the shift (accompanied with a bit of a grinding noise). It’s like the shifter wants to slot it into 1st! Either I am getting old stupid and imprecise or something went out of sync. I never missed shifts. If I drive normaly it does not happen, only when I rush the shift. Is it possible that shifter cable stretched? Does it go out of adjustment by itself? Do you guys adjust on regular basis? What’s the score here? Thanks.

Somebody on 6speed had the same issue and what he found was that the cable was slipping. he added a hose clamp to the part where the shifter meets the cable and it fixed the issue. I believe it was 2nd to 3rd as well.

Is the spring (in neutral) that moves the shifter under 3rd/over 4th working?

Odd thought and I don't really know if this could be it, but I recently changed my motor mounts and the shifts under hard acceleration immediately got smoother. Especially from 2nd to 3rd.

With your mileage if the mounts are worn out, the motor torquing under full throttle may be binding the cables a bit causing you to miss the shift.

Yep! They are wonderful things. I was surprised at how they affecting the shifting under hard acceleration which is why I had my previous thought.

I agree. Stiffer motor mounts improve shifting feel, especially for those cars with B&M shifters.

Thanks guys. I went for a drive really paying attention and I found out that all is ok no missed shifts if I was concentrating. However, my 3rd gear is slightly sidewise towards the 1st. It is not straight on slot from neutral. My mechanic told me this is normal – is it? Anyway, as I have short shifter I will do the mounts next. Anyone has part number for X73 and price?

X73 Motor Mount part # 996 375 049 91. Don't know about cost as mine came with the whole suspension kit,

Mine came with the suspension as well so don't know the price. I put them on a couple of weeks before the new suspension was actually installed, and was surprised at the difference just the mounts made.

The mounts alone are a good investment IMO.

[QUOTE=SSST;8887786]I put them on a couple of weeks before the new suspension was actually installed, [QUOTE]

I did just the opposite, I've had the suspension on for several months without the motor mounts. I installed the mounts last weekend and haven't driven the car yet as it's still up in the air doing some other non-mods. I hope to be up and running this weekend. It's nice to do incremental changes so you can tell the effect of each one.

Same here, my suspension is already done. You must report! Thanks.

You can also use the 997 semi-solid engine mounts made by Wevo on the 996TT, I used them in my car along with a 997 transmission bracket and it helps keep the drivetrain in place which improved the shifting alot especially at trackdays, just be aware that adding stiffer engine mounts will add more noise vibration to the car.

When my car is in neutral it is in line with 3rd gear and it has a SSK, since yours isn't you might need to get your SSK adjusted properly.

When you put the shifter in neutral, with your hand off the shifter, where does it line up in terms of where 3rd gear actually is (where does the spring place the shifter relative to the 3rd gear gate)?

With the shifter in neutral, when you select 3rd gear what is the physical progression of the shifter from neutral to the 3rd gear final resting location? Is it a straight line forward?

I just changed my motor/tranny mounts and noticed the same. I dont have to hunt as much. It's subtle, but smoother.
