Hi, I just noticed rattle at idle on my 996tt!

I've owned the car for 6 months already and never heard the sound. Today, at the gas station with my car against the wall I realised the car was too loud when idling. I left the car and was able to hear the "shat shat shat" sound or rustling or whatever at about 16hz rate - I had a feeling it was coming from the exhaust pipes. I opened the engine cover and could also hear it inside. The sound only appears when idling, if I rev the engine over 1000rpm, it goes away.

I was really frightened.... The sound was also pretty loud. But then found this thread. Nothing to worry about?

There are so many threads and opinions about this subject! Just do a Search. Some say it's different oil that will make them go quieter...some go as far as to say IMS.
Just leave it be...TT's run at idle like they're broken. But they're sure as Hell fast!

It's just the way they are. Unless it changes in volume, nothing to worry about. If you have to be next to a wall to notice it, then you are good.

Well, when inside the car I can only hear it next to a wall. From outside I can hear it straight from the engine.

Will have oil replaced today, going for Motul 300V Power 5W40.

New oil should quiet the noise. Let us know how it sounds with 300V.

By the way, it seems there are two types of 300V, a "4T" that comes in a black bottle, and "Racing" that comes in a metal can. It's my understanding you want the "Racing" 2 liter can.

I'm running Rotella 5-40 right now. After 2k miles it's quieter than M1 0-40, but not as quiet as M1 5-50. With summer coming on I will go back to 5-50 on the next change.
