Air filters
There was a thread a while back discussing aftermarket air filters. There was a non oiled filter the several of you use and I can't remember the brand
A quick search didn't help me out.
Can someone chime in on it?

Not really looking for power. There was a reusable filter mentioned that didn't use oil to trap particles, used the stock air box, and got rid of the vacuum cleaner noise.
I remember researching it and it wasn't cheap, but seemed to be well thought of. I book marked it, but have since bought a new computer. It's time for a new filter and I wanted to research it again.
I appreciate the advice, but just want to find that filter again.
Anyone remember what that is?

A favorite quote:
Joe Weinstein 9/5/09 on 6so:
Let's assume filter paper is better than oiled cloth at filtering, but more
restrictive. But this is on an apples-to-apples basis: surface area. An
oiled cloth filter with 10 sq. inches of exposed surface area will be much
more restrictive than a paper filter with 100 sq. inches of surface area.
We must credit Porsche engineers with enough high school level physics
skill to have calculated the area of paper needed to make flow a non-issue
at stock power levels. For any higher-power car, if and when it is determined
that the filter element is a gating factor, the correct solution is to simply
increase the area of paper. This would be much wiser than simply changing
to a filter medium which flows better but doesn't actually filter as well, and
needs care and maintenance to boot. Any box design that adds a second
parallel paper element gives the air immediately half the resistance with no
loss of filtering. Even two smaller paper elements that still have 30-40% more
total area would still be the total solution for any car producing up to 700hp.

And some data:

I like the story behind the test at the end. Cones and CAI's look cool and eye candy under a lid makes a new owner feel better about spending 200k on a car...see the gt3rs 4.0. I love the car...wonder if the cone filters are paper and just give lots of area....

What does the GT2RS use?
I have the following filters for my car:
- K&N
- EVOMS V flow (oil & oil free version)
- OEM paper filter
I for one cannot tell any difference in performance and am currently using the OEM paper filter.

looks like foam...might be "over" paper..who knows

In the end, I bet for up to 650 hp, the oem is fine. Above that, I'd call Kevin. The other option is oil changes ever 1-2k miles....
GMG had a neat version that was a cotton one without oil....no claims on power from them....people just feel the need to tweak little things.
Anyway, my 2c is leave the paper alone unless you have a built engine, and then ask your builder. If that is the case, you probably can afford to have engine problems. I cannot.

Constructed with 100% polyurethane on all four sides, this high flow, oiled OE replacement performance filter will out flow stock paper filter for improved horsepower and torque. Five layers of progressively finer mesh cotton gauze media provide maximum airflow for best performance results. Washable and reusable for multiple cleaning cycles, the tall open evenly space pleats provide excellent dust holding capacity for longer service cycle between cleanings. Integrated urethane bump seal insures tight, no leak seal over the life of the filter.
WTF, is it dry or oiled?
