Power Steering pump gone bad ? Video inside.
Is this the noise the P.s makes when it goes bad ? It started a few days ago. I didn't turn on the car for 3 days and for the first 20 or so seconds their was no whine, then the whine started to build up again.
This is a 997 power steering pump fwtw.

Make sure that is not the serpentine belt tensioner that is making that noise before changing the PS. They are both in the same area, and a couple of techs from my shop couldn't tell the difference and changed my PS and the sound was still there. It turned out to be the bearing in the belt tensioner.

Sounds more like my 996 Turbo did when one of the serpentine belt idler roller bearings went bad. The one up high right next to the power steering pump.
Does the noise change if you turn the steering wheel lock to lock? (Do not leave the wheel turned at either lock for this puts a strain on the pump/power steering system.)
Sincerely,
Macster.

It changes slightly near/at full lock, maybe its my ears playing but not much i would say. I hardly ever turn the wheel to lock. HM Do you happen to have the part number that was changed ? So I can purchase it and swap it out.

I'd not replace any idler roller bearing based solely on that I believe the noise sounds like the noise my car emitted when an idler roller bearing proved to be bad.
Shortly (within an hour) after first hearing the noise I had the car lifted in the air and both the shop owner (indy place in Tehachipi CA) and I were under the car and giving every location a good listen with of course the engine idling.
At the same time we both confirmed there were no fluid leaks or other signs of more serious trouble. We both agreed the noise was coming from the back fo the car up high but exactly where it was coming from neither one of us could say for certain.
Shortly after this I then discovered the radiator fan motor on the passenger side was not working and at this point I decided to head back home and have this and the 'dry bearing' sound addressed.
The car was covered by a CPO warranty. Also, I was at the jumping off point for a long (thousands of miles) drive heading out through the southwest in the summer and a dry bearing sound and a non-functioning radiator fan motor are not things I wanted wrong at the outset of the trip.
As an aside: Once the car was at the dealer and one of the senior techs there had had a chance to check the car out and clearly determined where the noise was coming from the tech told me the bad idler roller happened to be the least expensive one to replace. One (I do not know which one) I was told is quite expensive and the labor is more intensive to get at the thing and replace it.
So, even if it proves to be a bad idler roller bearing you want to make sure you know which one it is and what's involved in getting it replaced.
Sincerely,
Macster.

i had the ps pump valve whine and it only happened when driving hard and would stop after clutch depression. didn't sound like that noise in your vid. replaced it and noise gone. i'm not expert by any stretch but i'd go with belt noise also. GL

Thank you guys for the suggestions.
I removed the serpertine belt, the noise went away. So I took of the tensioner pulleys, cleaned them and swapped them from right to left and left to right. I started the car and the whine was still there. I shut down the car- cleaned everything up. Next morning turned on the car to drive the car home and no noise. After work, i drove it more, no noise. I checked the p/s fluid in the morning when engine was cold as manual states to do. It was way above the cold grey area it should be. I went to home depot bought some plastic feeding tube, and removed about 7 onces and it was in the middle of there it should be of cold start. I got a bit of whine but started to go away as the fluids circulated im guessing .
Thank you Larry for the part number, i will keep it in case it comes back.
