Default What size plug for the oil drain?

I wanted to buy oil drain plug magnets for the next time that I changed my oil. My wrench told me that the 996 Turbo already had magnets in their drain plugs. Well, after I pulled them to change my oil last month, it was obvious that there were no magnets in these plugs.

So, I need to find out what size the two plugs are for the crankcase and the oil tank. I figured that I'd get a magnetic plug for each. I called one of the local Porsche dealers, and the parts department told me that the screw was a M18 x 1.5. He also said that the two plugs were the same size.

Hmmmm. I seem to remember that the two plugs for the crankcase and the oil tank were different sizes. Am I wrong? Can anyone confirm to me what the sizes are for those two plugs?

TIA

Interesting. I don't really know how much oil flows through the Turbos, but I would think that if you really want to catch oil fragments flowing through the engine, you would be better off with the crankcase and oil tank.

I guess that it would make sense to put magnets at all 4 points, crankcase, oil tank and the two turbos. I have been impressed with the videos on the Dimple Magnet website. I just need to figure out what the sizes are for the various plugs.

Hence, this post.

Larry just found this post http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...n-plugs-2.html and the size of the plug is M20X1.5 (see the post from iceman153). Seem's to be the same one on the 944....

And also this place: http://www.goldplug.com/

But the Porsche are not in the list....May be if contact them....

Subaru got the same size ???? M20X1.5 : http://www.amazon.com/NRG-Magnetic-E.../dp/B00449YOGY

Also here: http://www.bloxracing.com/bloxshop/i...product_id=349

After some research because of my bad memory (getting old) it seems that the tank and the crankcase got the size and same pitch M20X1.5....

Skeptic that I am, I guess that I am going to have to find the plugs and measure them. I have called three Porsche dealers near me, and found the Turbo drain plug at one of them. The drain plug for the crankcase and for the oil tank are not in stock ANYWHERE.

I do (unbelievably) have a thread gauge and a caliper. Went to one dealer, and measured the Turbo drain plug, and it's a M18 x 1.5. I guess that I'm going to have to wait to get the measurements on the other two when I change my oil next time. I will post my results, but since I just changed the oil in my car, I'm not going to be doing it again for 6 weeks or so.
