Like the posts above it's really simple. Remove consult....many posts on how to do this.
Remove 2 screws and like the switch box out. Separate the box...there or 5 tabs you have to lift.
Bend the metal like explained above and reinstall. Even if it's your first time it won't take more than an hour

For those of you that have simply cleaned and bent the contacts, how long has the switch continued to function properly for you? I'd imagine that the plastic will eventually wear down to the point that the switch needs to be replaced. I'm about the fix mine, but am just trying to gauge if a new switch would last significantly longer than a repaired one...

My plastic peice where the "hump" is wasn't really worn down. The metal seemed to have "straightened" out over the years. I just "recurved" it.

I know this is a really old thread.....but does this switch also control the rear parking sensors?

On my Tiptronic 996 Carrera both the reverse lights and the rear parking sensors have stopped working.

Default Help A Bit Stuck

Sorry to dig this old thread up but I’m trying to fix the reverse sensor as per instructions given here ....hands up I forgot to put car in Neutral and disconnect battery.

So I’ve successfully removed the centre console but now the Tiptronic gear lever will not move....into Neutral or any other gear so what should I do next?

Battery is still connected and car starts etc just no gear lever movement.

Thanks for any advice I’m stuck here !!

You need to list the disassembly steps you have done in the exact order you did them in order for the rest of us to figure out where it went wrong.

Default How I get Here

Here’s where I’m at with taking central console out
Ok so I first took apart the gearstick **** and then removed the automatic gear surrounding. Then it was the standard stuff to remove centre console taking out ashtray removing window switch connectors undoing screws hidden by coin holder etc.

Whilst I was removing Center console I had to move gear lever to give extra room to get it out of tight spot.

Thats pretty much it....I haven’t disconnected battery so car still starts but unable to move gearstick (Tiptronic)

Thanks your a genius.....it’s so obvious once says it. Put gearstick back together and immediately moved. Now to get it into Neutral and all lined up before removing switch

I managed to take the switch apart and followed the instructions....gave it a quick blast with contact cleaner and a light rub with emery paper and then bent copper strips so they were closer together. Just tried putting it all back together and reverse lights and sensors are now working.

So thanks to everyone you’ve saved me a nice amount of money....now to put the console and trim all neatly back together.

Default Slight hitch

So everything has gone back in ok but I just can’t get the Tiptronic lever back in correctly and able to move properly.

I’m not sure if it’s the triangular plastic thing and spring not being seated correctly anyone have any ideas on how to get it all working correctly? This is how it looks but car will only go into P , R and N somehow it won’t go into D

Remove the console and see if it will go into drive. If it does you had the dust shield installed wrong. If it doesn't you have installed the gear sector mechanicals incorrectly.
