Just curious about what people use in their 996TTs.
I am thinking of using an 0w-40 and 15w-50 mix. I do a few HPDEs each year.
I like 5w-50 but it is twice the price of the other two and like to change my oil every year.

Please search on Oil topic...this has been discussed quite a bit. I would search posts by Author Kevin who has very specific oil recommendation for our cars. Feel free to read the entire debate.
But please, no more oil threads. :-)

Explore this and renntech.org.
Get the Porsche recommended list there.
And search here. One TT has almost 300k miles all on 0w-40 M1.
ALL approved oils are between 0w-40 and 5w-50. All are synthetic I think.
Most are 5w-40's - this has been covered. Change it when you should (search on that too). Done.

Kevin's recommendation can be read here:

the M1 5W50 is a great oil and recommended over the 0W40. However, there is a miracle or magic snake oil additive in the 5W40 Turbo Diesel Truck formulation that is reducing the engine gear/chain noise.
Either oil is a better choice over the 0W40. Especially for someone living south of the Mason Dixon line.

How in the world is 5W-50 twice the cost as 0W-40 and 15W-50? They are all the same price. Actually, I pay a tick lower for 5W-50 from a distributor here than the local auto parts stores charge.
And +1.....NO MORE OIL THREADS....

$40 for a case of 5w-50 (not affiliated). (BTW - don't be penny wise and pound foolish when maintaining your engine.)

I can get 5qts of 0w-40 or 15w-50 at Walmart for $24, I don't have a local source for 5w-50. So 5w-50 by mail order is 6qts for $50 shipped.

Yes.
If you know a place in NJ where I can walk in and buy 5w-50 for $5-$6 a qt. I will be there in an hour.
What auto parts stores near you sell 5w-50? If it is a chain maybe there is one near me.
Do you play golf? If you do you must know Tobacco Road CC?

If I'm not mistaken, 5W-50 needs to be purchased from a distributor since there is not large enough of a market for it to be stocked in brick and mortar stores. I'm sure there are a few but they are few and far between.
Here in the Raleigh area we are lucky to have a distributor that stocks it. If I remember correctly, I paid 39.50 a case which is about $6.50 a qt. It's a small price to pay for a $30K motor. 0W-40 is too thin and 15W-50 is too thick.

The case shipped to NJ is $53.09, that's $8.85 a quart.
Again, why nickel and dime on maintenance of the most expensive part of your car?
