I have found by leaving the crank case drain open/unplugged and draining oil tank the flow comes out steady with no great rush. I empty pan after draining crank case so its empty when draining oil tank= plenty of room. I also put cheap tarp under pan for easy clean up of any drips/spills.

Red, what are you going to do with the oil in the crankcase?

I just did my first oil change this weekend and it was almost flawless. Unfortunately, I was using this oil drain pan and the oil from the reservoir tank overflowed (oil pan couldn't keep up with the Great Flood!). It made quite a mess, but it cleaned up relatively well with Oil-Dri. Be warned, use an open oil drain pan!

That oil pan will work just fine. You just have to open the burp hole and the bottom end cap to let air into the pan, otherwise the oil won't go down from the top.

Lol, 20/20 hindsight. I had the small one open, but that was clearly insufficient. Thanks for the tip!

If it doesn't get it all, at least it minimizes Niagara Falls of oil mess and once its in the extractor its easier to cart away and dump... THOUGHTS???
I would like to see if anyone can respond to this question. If not, I may end up trying it myself, and then also drain from the plugs below to see how much additional oil comes out after extraction.

An oil extractor would probably work but why bother? Just put and old bed sheet down and open up the drain plugs.

And your never sure that you got all the oil out of the tank, and then what about the engine oil in the engine case? By mistake you have 2 extra quarts and then you overfill the engine and 2000 miles later, your main seal starts to weep. It's happened to a fellow Rennlister. His clutch was only 8 months old.

I just noticed.. My 7K post on Rennlist...

The best way to change the oil is drain the turbo, the crankcase and the tank via the drain plugs. This gets the most amount of used oil out. You can buy a full drain kit from Suncoast, it includes the crush washers for all the drain plugs and the a new filter and filter "O" ring. The only other thing you have to buy is the small "O" ring for the filter cap stem.
