Howto recognize a GT2/X50 Exhaust vs. Standard Turbo Exhaust

The quad tips were a option called "Stainless Steel Exhaust" @$750.00.
Named in the same bratwurst-in-cheek manner as "full" leather, which as we all know is pretty f'n far from being 'full', the SSE option only really meant that quad tip finishers were stuck on the standard dual exhaust outlets.
FWIW I know of a least one TTS that has the xxx....77 part number stamped on the OE muffler.

I have a 2005 turbo S and the tips were an option just like a regular turbo. The exhaust for a regualr turbo and X-50 is the same. I know because I replaced the exhaust system and they were the same part. As for the GT 2 I do not know

Thanks for the input, I know the thread in renntech but they're all referring to part numbers they see on their exhaust, unfortunately I cannot find one.
For me there were two reasons for the swap:
- according to my mechanic there is rattle noise coming from the cats
- X50 exhaust has a better sound
I'll mount it anyway because of reason 1 but would have been good to know if it really is an x50 exhaust or not...will be interesting if I hear a difference in noise.

Hi fedmax,
What did you think of the X50? I am asking because I have a fabspeed exhaust that I inherited from the PO, and, though it sounds good at higher revs, at lower revs, like cruising at 70 mph in 6th, it's horrid. Sure there are a lot of other exhausts out there, but they all cost $3k+, and how does one know which one will sound good? Heck, Fabspeed themselves make 4 variations for the 996tt.
So, at this point, I think my safe option is to go back to what the car came with. One thing that I suspect might make a strongly positive difference to the X50 exhaust, or any other stock tt exhaust, would be to replace the stock cats with 100 cell cats. I don't know the specs on stock Porsche tt cats, but typical factory cats are pretty restrictive.

The X50 does just have a little more bass. If you can, exchange the cats and you'll have a fantastic sounding exhaust and still keep it at a level where you can cruise around nicely without annoying yourself or other people.

He'm modifying your stock exhaust internally and with 100 cell cats. From his website:
P96Turbo /GT2 : "GT" Exhaust
The GT exhaust is a reworked original exhaust that is getting modified in our workshop. It looks just like stock on the outside but on the inside, the internals are modified and the stock catalytic convertors have been replaced by two German 100 cell high flow sport cats.
The result is a louder and deeper sound with no reasonance .
Less restrictive and a 17HP increase.
Will fit any P96TT, X50 and GT2.
The GT exhaust is sold on a core exchange base :
You get a "new" GT exhaust from us and within 3 weeks, you return your original exhaust.

Quad tips are an ordering option available on both the turbo and X50. Has nothing to do with the exhaust. I imagine the way to tell the difference is the $17,000.00 add on to the invoice?

I seem to recall that not so long ago folks were drilling a large-ish hole in the bend of the u-tube inside the muffler, it's accessible without removing the muffler - about 6 or 7 inches up.
Quality and exhaust note reportedly depended on the size of the hole.
It seemed a popular mod so there should be plenty of threads about it.

Tips are a different part- you can put 1uad tips on any car. Most dealers ordered the X53 quad tips with X50 so people think these are "x50 exhausts"...or that you can tell an x50 by the tips. wrong.
Only the GT2 had a different exhaust.
They all suck.
Now, if you choose to reject this advice I have an excellent stock X50 exhaust with only 17k and pristine cats... .

I have had both the X50 and Non X50 cars and the tips are options. And I never noticed an exhaust note difference. I did the drilling a hole thing on my last TT and loved the sound it made for next to nothing in cost ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

PS: I got my X50 as if it were a normal TT. Dealer did not know what he had. I reached up and felt the inter-coolers......Yup....raised fins as Kevin said
. Later when i looked at the turbos I also saw the X50 turbo part #'s I knew I had one
. And it was on the sticker

Sorry to revive an old thread, but just thought I'd mention there is at least one other difference between the X50 & regular Turbos. I just recently purchased a 2004 X50 car and have owned a 2004 "regular" Turbo as well. Not that it matters much, but the forward-most undercar shield is listed as 996 575 161 01 and is called "Front Air Duct". The X50 gets a modified version and is 996 575 961 00 and is called "Shovel Type Duct". Mine is cracked, so I discovered the diff looking at some undercar pics of my previous Turbo. Most dealer websites do not make a distinction for the X50's, but I see Auto Atlanta does list the model for this part number as "IX50". Anyway, to stay original I will order the Shovel Version, only about $12 more.
