That'll teach me to post before I confirm my info.

The Turbo with the X50 option is not more costly to service, at least per my local favorite Porsche dealer's service manager. Same servicing costs, intervals, etc., as the standard 996 Turbo.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Guess I have to find the right one for me. Will take my time and do the appropriate checking. As to Carfax, I know firsthand that it isn't reliable by doing my own checking. I assume Autocheck is the same.

The HP is great, but so is the "Strengthened Transmission".

So far maintenance has been the same...I also like that some parts are shared with the GT2.

Based on what I've read online and my experience is my assumption a "clean" report by any of these vehicle history reporting companies is not 100% accurate. There have been enough reports of car owners finding a previously owned car the history of they know very well having missing instances of in sometimes serious accident repair.

I do not believe the reports are purposely incorrect but there are limits to what the reports can contain and in one case one company was involved in a class-action suit regarding its failure to make it clear what its reports could contain and could not contain.

Thus I take a "clean" vehicle history report that at least nothing negative is there, but not by any means the vehicle's history is clean through and through.

OTOH, a negative item on a history report almost certainly is cause to reject the car though of course there have been mistakes made -- mainly regarding mileage entries which can indicate odometer tampering.

In the case of a car history report it can provide you with where the car spent its time and with this you can call various dealers in the area and with the Vin perhaps learn what servicing the car had. This of course provided the seller can't provide you the car's recent service history.

I mean what servicing say a 9 or 10 year old car had 9 or 10 years ago counts for less vs. what servicing it has had say the last 3 or 4 or more years.

This more recent service history is more pertinent. Also, what counts for more is what the car's condition is and how it makes it through a detailed used car inspection and certainly one specific to the make and model counts for more than ancient (so to speak) vehicle service history.

The check out should include a PPI provided you can find no reason to reject the car and believe of course should the PPI turn up nothing to cause you to reject the car that you can buy the car for a price you would be comfortable with.

I mean, if you're $10K apart with the seller almost certainly a PPI is a waste of money cause you're not going to be able to buy the car, unless you up your offer or the seller drops his price by that $10K difference. Unlikely in either case.

Sincerely,

Macster.

...
I have owned 4 cars that I have had insurance repair for collision damage done at very reputable shops. None of those repairs have shown up on the CarFAX reports that I have run after the repairs, even years after the repairs.

I do not trust any of these services. They are additional information, but certainly not an authoritative source even with their "guarantees".

+1 - they are rejection tools only.
