Default TT exhaust hack...

So before I bought the TT I was investigating a C4S. I read about an exhaust hack that bypasses the muffler. It seemed pretty simple to do and I thought about taking it further and setting up an electric exaust valve.

So, can this be done on the TT? Or do i have to spend $3k on an aftermarket?

This was done 6 years ago. The engine pulls timing.

Spend your money on a good exhaust system. Look for 130mm 100 cell cats, and 70mm piping.

Resurrecting thread because I'm investigating doing this myself... keep the stock cats/mufflers, and insert a bypass between them with a straight pipe out the back next to the stock pipe (minus tip)
I'm also thinking to use the blank switch on my dash as a spot to install a "Sport Exhaust" switch as the trigger.
We'll see what the shop says when they get it up on a rack...

you could always drill out the exhaust. from what I have read on here it seems like a pretty good option.

Here's my plan, in a rough sketch. Going to see if it's possible...

Red marks the location of the bypass pipe, and in the detail shot I tried to mock up where the valve would be.

Save the stock exhaust for smog, and buy a proper after market.
It's easy to swap out too. Put my BBi back on and it was an hour and 20 minute job, start to finish.

Smug Alert!

Seriously though, dropping 2-3k for an exhaust just to get the sound I want is ridiculous to me. Im quite pleased with the stock performance and just want more sound. The 2-3k will be going into a lift though which seems like a better investment for me.

Some people have to pay to play. Some people are DIY'ers and occasionally come up with some great ideas. I personally don't think the stock exhaust is an easy system to hack, but OP should give it a go if he wants.

Its not being smug. Your driving a 996tt performance parts are not cheap.

It just comes with modding a Porsche thats all

a better investment perhaps? but the lift won't add power or sound better lol..

i've always been under the impression that the *improvement* in sound of a performance exhaust was directly proportional to the added performance that a tuned ( made for the car ) performance exhaust provides. there is *usually* a corollation between the two, even with a PSE which what..simply opens "baffles" no?

if so, that would explain then why a hacked OEM exhaust neither sounds any *better* ( really now, c'mon lol ) than it does provide any noticeable ( or any at all? ) measurable *increase" in HP or performance.

believe me, as i had one that came with the car. can we say... someone "cheaped out"? is all.

but anyone remember porsche by ken modded exhausts? someone bought em!

i file exhaust, along with tires, in the "get what ya pay for" column.

In most every CA county you can't have anything other than stock as it would fail the visual part of the smog test. Either you don't live in CA, or you're lucky to live in one of the few counties that don't require testing (if there are anymore!).
