This failure is only related to the GT1 blocks and therefore the TT's are included.

2002 turbo, 85,000 miles - passenger side oil cooler manifold fitting blew out. Replaced with new factory part. The new part blew out on the drivers side less than one year (8,000 miles) later. Welded them both in place for a permanent fix.

Sold it about 5 months ago. Was doing more track time and wanting something slightly more track oriented. Although based on my lap times I'm not a whole lot faster

Scary stuff right there. From the looks of it, it did not really contact the rear tires? But I can certainly see how it might if it was one of the other hoses.

This makes me paranoid about hauling around in my 996TT. The last thing I would want is a coolant hose letting go and the car to go veering off into who knows where. It's tempting to address the "glued" in fitting issue as well as replace all coolant hoses as preventative maintenance before they become problems.

What is the procedure for welding since one part is cast and the other part is extruded aluminum?

I don't think the fittings are aluminum. I am pretty sure they are stainless steel, as they are pretty strong and do not bend easily and they have to take a very tight clamp. I gave it to my welder and he did it. I seem to recall I said they were aluminum and he told me they were steel...they look like aluminum, though.

What is the cast manifold made of them? From what I understand it is a really bad idea to weld two different types of metal together.

I think he brazed it. My welder has a lot of experience and would have told me if the weld was a questionable situation...time will tell, I feel confident I'm all set now.

Deputy,

Here are pictures of the welded fittings - doesn't look like it's going to pop out again...

Here is a picture of the first repair in process. Ugly and the reason I don't want to ever go there again...
