'01 996tt - common problems
#17
To add the what everyone else said mainly regarding the tip, since I own one, check or be prepared to perform the following if they werent't performed:
Transmission mounts, not very expensive about $300 or so but make sure it has been done or have them checked during the PPI. These get worn if the car has been driven hard, mine were ok during PPI but after 4 track days they were loose and showed wear on a car with 45k miles by then.
Transmission control module in the early cars was prone to a software issue with the controler. This manifested itself after hard driving for a while and then driving in a normal civil manner. This started as a grinding noise after 4 track days coming from the transmission, when driving within 1,500 to 2,000 RPM. I checked the forums and apparently there was a service bulletin issued by Porsche about this and the solution was to replace the control module with a newer unit. I did it and the tippy works so much better than before, as it has new mapping, it would be worth doing if you didn't even have the problem. This is a potential $2,200 issue.
I had both issues taken care of by the extended warranty so I feel I am getting my money's worth from it. I really enjoy the tip now, except for the buttons on the steering wheel; would prefer paddles. It sure beats the cost of a car with PDK though.
Good luck in your search,
Tytus
