Well, not all. Not mine anyhow. At least from the fuel tank/pump. I ran the fuel level rather low on occasion. Just today filled up tank to the tune of over 12 gallons worth. In a couple of instances have added just over 13 gallons after covering over 300 miles.

The car does generate a high frequency but very faint squealing like sound when slowing down by coasting on closed throttle at low speeds with transmission in gear and clutch fully engaged.

When the noise is present the only thing I"ve observed is the noise goes away when I depress the clutch pedal.

I believe it is coming from the hydraulic assisted clutch lines or power steering pump or something related to that.

Been making this noise since I got the car over a year ago and for a bit over 30K miles. Hasn't gotten any worse or better.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I should clarify... I generally only hear the whine when I come in from a track session. The pump has been working hard. And it doesn't take long on track to get below 1/2 tank.

I'm off on a trip this morning, and will cover around 1k miles in the next 5 days. I'll give the mechanic a call when I get back.

My whine did stop last night when I filled up - but the tank was 2/3 full before that.

My pump continued whining pretty much the whole trip regardless of how much fuel I had in the tank. I called the mechanic who said it's definitely not normal so I need to take it back to them for a listen.

Unfortunately, as I've indicated in previous posts - I have the most unreliable car in the world. So I can't take it back to the mechanic yet, because tonight I have to drop it off at the dealer I bought it from - so that their mechanics can fix the brake pad wear warning light problem - which I've proved is coming from the same wheel that it was fixed for 6 months ago. I'll ask their opinion on the fuel pump whine too - but since that was sorted by my normal mechanics, it obviously needs to go back to them for resolution.

Did they change the fuel filter at the same time? Could be that it's putting up too much resistance to the fuel flow. Only thing I can think of.

I certainly hope so - it had a 48k service at the same time. Funnily enough, the car went back to the dealer tonight for the brake problem - and their guess was also that perhaps something was causing the fuel pump to work extra hard.

Sorry to hear Dave because you are not getting the satisfaction that the rest of us feel for the 996TT platform.

An update.

Dropped the car at the mechanics earlier this week and just called them for an update. They're going to replace the fuel pump under warranty - but also replace the "fuel tank sender unit". They tell me this has an inbuilt filter, and it's that which they believe is causing the problems with the pump.

I probably won't get the car back until Monday, and then I'll need to keep my fingers crossed that it's fixed. I had the alignment done a couple of weeks ago (with new control arms etc.) and that has transformed the car into something else entirely - so if I could just get this sorted, I'll be very happy.

Just an update in case anybody uses search for this in future.

So far, the problem has not happened again - so I think the fuel sender unit (and the filter in it) probably was the cause.
